Description

In 1918, Oakland was one of five companies making up General Motors (the other makes being Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Chevrolet) From 1926 to 1931 Oakland 'transmogrified' itself into a cheaper version called Pontiac. The Model 34B was a development of the successful 1917 Model 34A, notable new features for 1918 being overhead valves (unusual in US Cars) and full pressure lubrication to the mains and big end bearings. The Model 34 was so successful that it was continued through 1919, 1920 and 1921, selling about 160,000 cars in total. The Model 34B has an engine of 177 cu.in. (2.9 litres) producing 44 bhp at 2,660 rpm, quite powerful for any 1918 car let alone a US one. There are rumours that the 34s did well in hill climbs like Pikes Peak. The cone clutch functions smoothly and the gearbox is a typical easy change 3 speed. The wheelbase is 112 inches, and track 56 inches. This car is fitted with a Remy Starter, Dynamo and Lights, and a Klaxon electric horn. Various accessories are fitted like the 'More-room' steering wheel, aka 'Fatman wheel', Oakland Tread Plates and an Oakland Motometer The car has also been fitted with a freewheel and overdrive. (The freewheel/overdrive works similarly to the Borg Warner boxes fitted to the late 30s Rileys) Altogether a very advanced car for its day. The car's history has been researched and a copy of all previous owners and an article which appeared in The Cars and Parts magazine in August 1981 is also included the very comprehensive file of documentation. The car has been used and driven to shows including a 100 mile round trip and drives extremely well, steering and stopping easily with the overdrive making it long legged for a car of this period. The freewheel also enhances the driving experience by making gear changes easy. The overall condition of the car is excellent and would please the most fastidious purchaser. For more information please call. More detailed photographs will be on our website. We are located just south of the Hindhead Tunnel near Liphook just off the A3. Delivery can be arranged at very competitive rates.
