Description

1952 Bentley MkVI Special by Johnard £39,995 In the world of Sportscars the appeal of the Vintage Bentley persists and nothing has ever replaced it. This sleek and graceful Special-Bodied Bentley is no pseudo vintage car but a tough, functional open sportscar which is built as low and slim as possible to restrict frontal area. It has outstanding traction, the combination of LSD, anti-tramp suspension and rearward weight distribution add up to extra grip on the road, wheelspin is not an option! Eligible for BDC Racing Events, it has all the vintage virtues, but above all it is a genuine Bentley with all that name implies and the craftsmanship that only a top class engineering firm like Johnards can provide. Finished in Carmen Red with black leather upholstery, fold-flat screen, , luggage rack, tonneau and hood. This car has just had a major engine overhaul and will require running-in. It has been very well maintained and is MOTd and ready to go, having recently had cã6000 spent on her. NLC 829 is featured in Ray Roberts definitive book of Bentley Specials and Special Bentleys and listed as a November 1952 registered R type conversion to Donington specification, on chassis number B260SR, with engine number B130S. Body Number 10, of just 16 built by Johnard Vintage Car Repairs of Blandford, Dorset between 1975 and 1982, this example has had very little use, with the odometer reading just over 7250 miles since construction. Widely acclaimed to be the best MkVI Special - made by what is now McKenzie and Guppy Blandford http://www.mckenzieguppy.co.uk/ Based on the standard MkVI Bentley, the chassis were shortened and lowered with a 9 foot 1 inch wheelbase, powerful 4 and quarter litre straight six engine with 4 speed manual gearbox. The gear lever was moved from the right side to the centre for easier (and quicker) gear shifting. The power unit and gearbox were moved back by around 18 inches, driving through a 2.88:1 Jaguar limited slip rear axle. Shod with Wolfrace alloy wheels as standard with front disc brakes, The cockpit tub of the flowing body is moulded fibreglass (5/16 thick) and is indistinguishable from pressed steel. Steel rollbar moulded into the scuttle. With long sweeping GRP fenders, in the classic manner, aluminium bonnet, slab petrol tank and spare wheel, servo-assisted brakes and alternator, the Donington weighed in at just a fraction over a ton. There are 4 period motoring magazine road tests on request:- Autosport (John Bolster) / Road & Track (Doug Nye) / Autocar (Edward Eves) / Motor (Gordon Bruce) Autosport76 Autocar77_BentleySpecials R&T_0177_Johnard Motor1976_BentleyDonington According to Ray Roberts book, it was sold in 1990 at a Sothebys auction, the car was later understood to be seen in the Jack Barclay showrooms before ownership for several years in Hampshire, and then Norfolk. With only 16 cars ever built this is rare opportunity to acquire a professionally designed and built, fully-sorted Bentley Special for a relatively modest outlay. More Technical Info Engine set back in the frame which involves moving the cruciform bracing completely and substituting a pair of additional side members running parallel with the original ones. These in turn are shortened by usual 12 and three additional tubular cross members, one of them 4 dia. are added to restore torsional stiffness. Shortening the chassis and moving the engine back allows the use of a one piece propshaft. Bearing in mind that the car runs on 15 wheels a Jag Mk2 axle casing is used with an E-Type 2.88 to 1 crown wheel set and LSD. Bentley MkVI hubs are grafted on the Jag half shafts to take the Bentley drums. To lower the chassis, the rear spring hangers are modified and the front coil springs shortened to give the appropriate ride height. The RR mechanical servo system has been removed and replaced with Lockheed Pedal-Pusher type vacuum system, to match the braking wit
