Chrome wire wheels and wide whitewall tires make this car draw attention wherever it is shown.Powered by a 90-horsepower 161-cubic inch six cylinder engine, the Kaiser-Darrin was created to compete with Chevrolets Corvette in the growing sports car market. The Kaiser-Darrin was styled by Santa Monica-based Howard Dutch Darrin, who had also designed for Packard and Studebaker. Unusual for the time, the Kaiser-Darrin had a fiberglass body, a three-position top and sliding doors that disappeared into the front fenders when opened. In 1954, the models only year of production, a mere 435 cars were built in addition to an estimated six pre-production prototypes. The Darrins body was built by Glaspar Boat Company because of their pioneering work in fiberglass boats, and the original Darrin prototypes were shown to the public before the Corvette or Thunderbird. Our car is #393 of the full production, and very few survive. The car is powered by 6-cylinder Willys F-Head 161 CI engine with three-speed gearbox and overdrive. Documents with the car show that the car was owned by Darrin himself in1958 at which time he sold it to an owner who had the car in long-term storage. The odometer shows only 3,800 miles. The car was subject to total nut and bolt restoration to standards suitable to the most prestigious concours lawns. We have never seen its equal.
