A new body gave the 1969 Camaro a longer and lower appearance. Sport coupe and convertible were offered, with option package selections having great effect on final appearance features. The formerly smooth-side body was now more highly sculptured, with a side feature line tracing the forward edge of the front wheel housing and running straight from the top of the opening to the rear of the car. A second line traced the front of the rear wheel opening and bended into the main one. Simulated vertical air slots were positioned ahead of the rear wheel. The Rally Sport option offered a special black grille with concealed headlights, the retractable headlamp doors being decorated by a triple-slot design motif. A functional ‘Super Scoop’ hood was available with Z-28 or Super Sport (SS) packages. Standard equipment began at the safety-oriented level and included the mandatory head rest option plus, heater and defroster; integrated front headlight and parking light unit; Strato-Bucket front seats; all-vinyl interior; carpeting; Astro Ventilatuon system; front shoulder safety belts; lefthand OSRV mirror; side marker lights; E78 x 14 two-ply (four-ply rated) black sidewall tires; 140 horsepower Six or 210 horsepower V-8 and, in convertibles, interior courtesy lights. In terms of power, the rare ZL-1 Camaros became one of the year’s hottest and most collectible cars. Optioned with a 427 cubic inch V-8 featuring aluminum block construction and three two-barrel carburetors, these 425 horsepower jobs were built in limited numbers for factory experimental racing purposes. Production of only 69 units has been reported. Nearly as desirable to car collectors, although not quite as rare, is the Indianapolis Pace Car replica Camaro. According to several articles, about 100 original editions were built and provided as official cars for dignitaries and press personalities attending the 500 Mile Race. The actual Pace Car was an RS/SS 396 convertible and most of the rest were SS 350 rag-tops. However, experts on the marque seem to universally agree that a Pace Car package was later marketed for the general public, leading to the sake of about 2000 more of these specially- trimmed models. Unfortunately, this package does not show-up on either the initial factory options sheets, or the May 1, 1969 revised sheets, that were used in researching this Catalog. Therefore, it is currently impossible to document exactly what equipment was included, or the prices in effect.
