Well-known to custom-car fans as “Truly Rare”, this radically customized 1950 Buick Sedanette was created by Gene Howard of Bloomington, Illinois during the late-1950s/early 1960s period. Body modifications were virtually endless and included an extended oval grille, extended front fenders with forward-sloping headlights, front-fender cutouts, body side coves, a restyled rear roofline and rear deck, as well as a radical rear fender and taillight treatment. Tiller steering was originally used, with the assistance of famed customizer Gene Winfield, and a heavily chromed and beautified early Chrysler “Hemi” V-8 with a six-carb intake system provided power. The highly detailed engine bay even featured upholstered panels! Distinctively finished in lavender, “Truly Rare” toured the show circuit with Mr. Howard and appeared on the cover of the Fall 1965 edition of Popular Customs.

The car was subsequently refinished, and a conventional steering wheel replaced the tiller steering arrangement. Interest in the car has been great over the intervening years, with renewed interest in the great customs and the men who designed and built them. Accordingly, the offering of “Truly Rare” provides a fantastic opportunity to enjoy, show and preserve their rich creative legacy.
