This is a fantastic classic car that runs! The Lafayette 400 was sold as the 'Salesman's Car', this model came with a back seat that folds down and opens to a sheet of plywood in the trunk - they are rumored to have included a mattress (not included with this car). They also included a shade on the back window, which this one still has, though it needs reconditioning.
This Lafayette appears to be 100% original. I started rebuilding it a few years ago, but family demands haven't allowed me the time to complete. I sent out the carburator and gas tank to be completely reconditioned professionally. My mechanic gave the engine a tune-up and basic overhaul. There is a new electronic fuel pump and other minor parts. The glass is all new with tint within the laminate - it looks 30's gangster badass with this light tint, especially with the large running boards and the suicide doors. All of the door and window seals are also new.
The interior looks to be all original with beautiful inlays in the wood and fabrics, including rope accents. The interior needs to be completely redone, but the core, springs, and everything seems to be in great shape.
In all of the work and on the lift, we didn't notice rust beyond surface rust, the most significant being in the trunk. This car appears to have been garage kept most of its life. I truly believe this is a great specimen for a complete renovation to original standards. It is complete, solid, runs, and has many original details intact.
Mechanically, all it needs is a generator rebuild - it charges, but not enough to maintain the battery for long periods of time. It is a 6 volt system.
The car has a heater and front windshield defrost vents. It also has auto wipers and dash lights.
I encourage any bidder to come inspect the car. Let me know if I can offer any information
