Before you go judging this book by its cover, have a look at what lives under this 1986 Suzuki Samurais skin. Transformed from the 4-wheel-drive equivalent of a Yugo into a thundering V8-powered sleeper, this little trucklet might be the most fun you can have without an arrest warrant being issued. Wearing a shade that can only be called Grabber Blue, this Samurai still looks like the diminutive 4x4 that took America by storm back in the 80s. Heck, finding an intact Samurai, let alone one this straight and unabused is a miracle, and then someone spent a lot of time getting the sheetmetal straight before they started spraying paint. The fender flares were molded in, and it appears that the entire truck was disassembled before work started, so theres no trace of the original 80s-dull paint. To be honest, the fit and finish on this truck are pretty darned impressive. The original badges have been shaved, but they kept things like the grille, bumpers, door handles, and other exterior components in their original state so they stand out against the bright blue paint. The black cloth buckets are out of a late-model, but the rest of the interior is still very much Suzuki. A center console has been fabricated to handle the oversized V8 up front and painted to match, so the interior looks funky cool and highly functional. The original Samurai gauges are still ahead of the driver, with the vents on the dash commandeered for auxiliary instruments to watch the small block V8. A B&M shifter between the seats manages a reliable, rugged TH350 3-speed automatic and the mini pickup bed behind the seats offers lots of storage for modestly-sized gear. Youll also note the sheetmetal is in excellent shape with no rust or rot in the critical areas, and the original top irons are in place, along with two tops, bikini and fully enclosed. Mechanically, however, all traces of the Samurai are long gone, replaced by rugged, reliable American hardware that should last forever in the lightweight trucklet. The engine is a 305 cubic inch Chevy V8, which provides more than adequate power to make this Samurai a champion of the stop light grand prix. The engine is rather neatly stuffed into the engine bay with not a lot of room to spare but everything works well and it actually looks like something that should have come this way originally. Theres a custom aluminum radiator up front and power brakes give it eyeball-popping stopping power. In fact, the front subframe is from a Chevy S10, disc brakes and all, and the rear is probably from the same truck and lives at the end of a radically shortened driveshaft. Twin Flowmasters give this Samurai a voice that will get more than its share of double-takes out on the street, and the engineering throughout is quite impressive, so dont worry about spinning the tires every chance you get. Color-matched steelies with trim rings and hubcaps give it a simple look that understates its performance, and the 205/65/15 tires look positively massive on the little truck, so it has the perfect street stance.
