Description

Complete stock except Torque Thrust wheels and Flowmaster mufflers. Amazingly straight, rust-free car in a spectacular color combination. Recently serviced and ready to enjoy.

Don’t let the flashy Torque Thrust wheels fool you, this incredible black Series 62 hardtop is almost entirely stock. It’s unlikely that you’ll ever find a straighter 1962 Cadillac, as this rust-free example hails from a sunny, warm climate and shows the most laser-straight sheetmetal we’ve ever seen. Originally code 24 Avalon Blue, the current black finish, which tends to magnify any little flaw, only highlights the crisp creases in the steel and the razor-sharp fins that make the car look a mile long. There’s no filler, no patches, no issues in the original sheetmetal, and whomever was tasked with applying the inky finish did an expert job because there’s absolutely no sign of the original color anywhere on the car—until I looked up the paint code I was certain this was originally a black car. Although the paint work is now several years old, it still looks spectacular, with only some very, very minor microblisters around one of the taillights. The bumpers, grille, and headlight trim sparkles with nary a blemish to be found, and the jet-like taillight housings, which were redesigned at the behest of the hearse industry to create wider tailgates, are beautifully rendered.

Inside, the spacious, bright interior offers accommodations for up to six on new leather hides. Both front and rear seats were reupholstered in correct code 33 Blue leather that’s a wonderful complement to the black paint and a lovely combination that you just don’t see very often. There’s also more evidence of this car’s easy life in the fact that it appears that the door panels, dash, and possibly even the carpets are original and in outstanding condition. The markings on the instruments remain clear, and the almost delicate two-tone steering wheel shows no cracks or signs of UV damage. Accessories include power windows and power seats, as well as a signal-seeking AM radio with power antenna. Seat belts have also been added and the trunk is fully reupholstered in the usual gray mouse fur that looks great and is hiding no surprises underneath.

Cadillac’s robust 390 cubic inch V8 made 325 horsepower in 1962, more than enough to make the Series 62 hardtop a formidable performer on the street. Despite the throaty Flowmaster exhaust system that sounds potent, the engine idles with that characteristic silky smoothness that defines Cadillac luxury. It wears correct Cadillac Blue paint and proudly spells out CADILLAC in block letters on each valve cover. The stock air cleaner, generator, and power steering pump dress it appropriately, and there’s a new master cylinder (1962 was the first year for a dual reservoir). A 4-speed HydraMatic automatic was standard equipment, and it clicks through the gears with smooth precision spinning a set of highway-friendly 2.94 rear gears. The chassis is coated in a light dusting of undercoating, but it doesn’t hide anything, as the original sheetmetal is exceptionally straight and clean, the brackets and body mounts are crisp, and it shows no signs of major repairs or rust. This is an extremely clean car in every way. And even if you’re a purist, the polished Torque Thrusts with their 235/75/15 blackwalls could easily be swapped out for a set of original wheels and hubcaps and perhaps even a set of whitewalls.

Black Cadillacs are always something special, and you would not be able to find a straighter ’62 hardtop than this. With a ton of character and class, it’s a very affordable way to capture the high style of the early ‘60s. Call today!
