The Chrysler Town and Country convertible occupies a special position in the automobiles history, the only wood-bodied convertible built in series on a luxury chassis. Wood as an exterior body material enjoyed a resurgence in the years immediately following World War II, expressing the American fascination with suburban estates and enjoying the rich, natural grain, figure and color of varnished wood. It was an extravagance that harmonized with Americans confidence and prospects. In 1949 Chrysler re-designed its line, replacing the wood-bodied Town and Country with a wood-accented steel body with Dinoc mahogany panels, making the few full wood-bodied TandCs, only about 8,400 built from 1946-1948, among the most celebrated collector cars. This 1948 Chrysler Town and Country convertible is attractively finished in deep Meadow Green with green leather and beige cloth upholstery, beige carpets and a beige cloth top. It is equipped with the New Yorkers big 323 cubic inch inline eight-cylinder engine making 135 horsepower at 3,400 rpm, Fluid Drive, pushbutton radio, remote spotlight, and heater. The body wood has been refinished and repaired as needed and the paint, chrome and interior are uniformly good. It has benefited from recent extensive service including a brake system rebuild, remanufactured carburetor and new water pump. It will be a great car to drive and enjoy.
