Description

Having emerged debt-free from its wartime service building Rolls-Royce Merlin airplane engines and powerplants for other military equipment, Packard returned to the business of building automobiles. Although its focus on mid-market cars carried over from the pre-war Depression era, Packard still produced the upscale Super Eight, a particularly rare version of which is offered here in this handsome and elegant 1949 Victoria convertible. The 22nd Series of Packard's was introduced in August of 1947. Since Packard did not limit itself to model year changeovers unlike its larger competitors, the new models were marketed until May 1949. These new Packard models had clean and streamlined 'Free-flow' styling. There were radically rounded with an elongated hood and an 'ox-yoke' upper grille with horizontal, wraparound lower grille. They were elegant, modern, and attractive. The New York Fashion Academy chose the new 22nd Series Packard line as its 'Fashion Car of the Year' for 1948. This specific '49 Packard Super Eight Victoria Convertible is a one owner car that has benefited from an older restoration. The car is still in show quality condition and drives as nice as it looks. We have the original vehicle invoice from Packard Mount Vernon, Inc. out of Mt. Vernon, N.Y. showing the car was originally sold on March 28, 1949 for $3,794.14. The buyer traded in his 1940 Ford for the car and received $1,253.64 for a trade in value! The invoice shows that the car came with the factory options of Electromatic clutch and overdrive, fender shields, fresh air heater and defroster, radio with vacuum antenna, white sidewall tires, bonnet ornament and wheel trim rings. We also have a copy of the original purchase contract for the car and copy of a 1976 Arizona title showing when the car came to Arizona. That 1976 Arizona title is still in the original purchaser's name and shows the car has been in Arizona for nearly 40 years! Still finished in its correct color of Sylvan Green with a tan convertible top, the car is in wonderful condition throughout. The power convertible top works with no problems and is new. The paint is a lacquer finish and does show some very minor cracking upon close inspection. The majority of this is to the top of the hood and front fenders. This is only visible upon very close inspection, from 5 feet, the paint looks great. Both front and rear bumpers are in very good condition and do appear to be original for the car. They are solid but do show scratching and minor pitting from age. The rest of the stainless trim looks very good and shows no damage. Inside, the interior has been reupholstered in the correct color and material and looks very good. The interior was replaced at the time of restoration and is showing some spots of age as you can see in the photos. There is a small split to the drivers side seat seam as well as a repaired split to the rear bench seat. The carpet, door panels and kick panels are all in great condition with only very minimal wear showing. The car does have power windows and power bench seat. Under the hood, the big inline 8 cylinder runs extremely smooth, as they're all known for. Connected to the three speed manual transmission, the car is a joy to drive. The engine compartment is extremely clean and nicely detailed. The clutch is strong and the car shifts between gears with on problems. The underside is very clean and solid and shows that it's spent the majority of its life in Arizona. In the trunk you will find a full size spare as well as a jack. The current mileage shows 90,590 and the VIN number is 2279910475. The car is being sold on a clean Arizona title.
