Coveted by collectors worldwide, the Pantera sports car was produced by the DeTomaso car company of Italy beginning in 1971. This Pantera offered here is a superb example of an expertly restored and maintained car. The previous owner has created a magnificent collector edition. The word "Pantera" is Italian for "Panther". Designed by American designer Tom Tjaarda the Pantera replaced the DeTomaso Mangusta. Several excellent modifications were made for the 1972 model year Panteras. A new 4 Bolt Main Cleveland Engine, also 351 in3, was used with lower compression ratio but with more aggressive camshaft timing.
Other engine changes were made, including the use of a factory exhaust header. Ford ended their importation to the U.S. in 1975, having sold roughly 5,500 cars in the United States. In the rest of the world DeTomaso continued to build the car for another two decades..
This 1972 DeTomaso Pantera has been fully restored including bare metal re-spray, rebuilt engine with upgraded cam, beautifully redone seats in leather and other improvements. It is very well sorted and drives beautifully, with a very strong but tractable engine, excellent transmission and brakes, and ice-cold air-conditioning. It was recently upgraded to R134 specifications. Featuring an excellent Alpine stereo system, very interesting and great sounding Huffaker exhaust along with unusual and attractive 3-pice wheels. Collectors and enthusiasts agree that the Pantera by DeTomaso is a classic sports car at a very competitive price point. Finding a Pantera isn’t easy, but enthusiasts will tell you that the acquisition is worthwhile, because unlike other supercars with similar styling and performance, this Italian steed is not extremely expensive to buy or maintain.
