1938 Pierce Arrow
This 1938 Pierce-Arrow V-12 custom-bodied Phaeton has been researched by members of the Pierce-Arrow Society and is the last existing Pierce-Arrow built! This automobile is the only P-A. custom-bodied phaeton built between 1933 and 1938. Classic auto enthusiast should know that any V-12 Pierce-Arrow is rarer than a Duesenberg! The V-12 Pierce engine is an engineering masterpiece that lasted longer than any engine design in the world. It was bought by Seagrave after 1938 and lasted fifty years, from 1932 to 1982. In 1865, George N. Pierce founded his company in Buffalo, New York. Pierce-Arrows were built from 1901 until 1938. Less than seventeen cars were made that year! Pierce-Arrow has always been regarded as the finest motor car in the world! In early years, the bodies of the Pierce were made of cast aluminum and were half an inch thick in some areas. In August of 1933, AB Jenkins at Bonneville, with a V-12 Pierce Roadster, garnered fourteen world records and international records! The following year, he averaged 127.2 MPH for twenty four hours.
Pierce-Arrows have forged both beauty and distinction in producing automobile perfection! In its long and glorious history, there is no rarer or more overwhelming and beautiful Pierce-Arrow than No. 3190011! Not much information is known about this Bohman and Schwartz custom-bodied phaeton... It was custom built in 1938 and spent its early years in Los Angeles and Pasadena, California. From the mid 1960s until now, it has been undergoing various restoration work. Basically, this Pierce has been unseen by anyone until now, and hopefully its debut will be at Pebble Beach 2013. Best of Show!
Its current restoration has been an extensive four and a half year ground up, body-- off restoration. The interior woodwork uses five very exotic scarce woods. These exotic woods include: Italian olive, lignum vitae, zircote, amboyna burl, and bloodwood. There are over 3,500 pieces inlaid! The (Pasadena Rose Bowl) rose vine is inlaid brass as well as the shift knob! This classic auto has eliminated side mounts to make it aesthetically pleasing. Bowman and Schwartz trademarks include: long flowing carriage-sill fenders, shortened running boards trimmed in chrome strips, rear fender skirt with medallions, and authentic wind-wings made in 1938. Bowman and Schwartz used this same type of wind-wing on several of their phaetons created in 1938 (through 1941). In addition to the wind-wings, this Pierce also features their California style top, meant to be taken off and left in the garage for leisurely tours in sunny Los Angeles.
The coachbuilders Bohman and Schwartz existed between 1932 and 1947, and were one of the last custom body builders. Born in 1892, Christian Bohman had been apprenticed as a coachbuilder in his hometown of Stockholm, Sweden. He immigrated to New York City in 1910 and quickly found work fittign interior woodwork and hardware to completed coach bodies at three of Manhattans most famous firms: Holbrook, Brewster, and (finally) Healey Company. Following the purchase of Healey Company (his current employer) in 1921 by the Walter M. Murphy Co., Bohman moved to Pasadena and became chief body assembler for the new firm.
