Highly original survivor with correct original drivetrain. Single family ownership for more than two decades. Fully documented, including Marti Report.
This GTA fastback offers a refreshing dose of reality, presenting in virtually 100% original condition. Paint, interior, and the original drivetrain are all intact and in excellent condition thanks to an easy life in the same family for more than 20 years. It shows just 76,034 miles, which are authentic, and could be ready for preservation-class judging with little more than a weekend of work. Paint is the original code K Nightmist Blue, a dark blue with just a hint of metallic in it that gives the GTA an upscale look that matches its sophisticated mission. The car has never been wrecked or rusty, and all the exterior sheetmetal is as-installed by the workers at the Metuchen, NJ factory back in June of ’67. In the same way, all the trim remains in great shape.
The two-tone blue interior is in excellent original condition save for the seat covers, which have been recently replaced. However, the original seat covers are included with the car, given the market’s preference for survivor-grade vehicles. You may also note the large CB radio fitted to the transmission tunnel, which has been there since the early ‘70s and is now a permanent part of the car’s history and a cool piece of electronica from when the car was in regular use. Fold-down rear seats make the fastback surprisingly practical, too, extending the cargo capacity of the modest trunk and offering the ability to carry long objects without hanging them out back.
Although early Mustangs can’t be specifically “matching numbers” there is no question that this is the GTA’s original A-code 4-barrel 289. It has never been rebuilt or opened, but a few years ago it was given a thorough detail and a fresh coat of Ford Blue paint, then dressed up with a set of Cobra valve covers and matching air cleaner. Of course the original components are included with the car, so it can easily be taken back to 100% stock in a matter of hours. The stock cast iron exhaust manifolds remain in place, feeding a replacement exhaust system that is several decades old but still sounds awesome and exhales through correct quad tips under the rear valence.
The ‘A’ part of GTA stands for ‘automatic transmission’ and in this case, it’s Ford’s indestructible C4 3-speed automatic. With upgraded internals and a special valve body for use in the GTA, it snaps off shifts like a Marine drill team, and is specifically calibrated for manual shifting if you’re so inclined. Out back, there’s an indestructible 9-inch rear full of highway-friendly 3.00 gears, so this fastback is a relaxed cruiser at highway speeds and beyond. Sure, the chassis is a bit crusty, but there’s no structural rust, no holes in the floors, none of the usual issues that torture vintage Mustangs. Again, this is all evidence of an easy life where the car was not used as a winter beater—even the rockers and quarter panels are solid and rust-free! The original 14-inch steel wheels wear their original hubcaps, as well as a set of recent 205/70/14 Goodyear whitewall radials that look exactly right on the vintage fastback.
This is a beloved car only reluctantly on the market, and it’s obvious that for more than three decades, it has been a treasured companion. With the Mustang A-list getting more exclusive and expensive all the time, doesn’t it make sense to put this GTA in your garage today? Call now!
