82,000 original miles, recent service and cosmetic freshening. All mechanical systems fully functional, including galley and pumps. Two A/C units. 454 cubic inch GMC commercial chassis.

Even in the ‘80s, the Airstream shape was instantly recognizable and thanks to impeccable taste, this 1988 Model 345 remains as viable for travel today as when it was new. Based on a GMC commercial chassis, the classic rounded shape remains pure Airstream, and the bare aluminum flanks cause a stir everywhere it goes. The aluminum has been recently cleaned and shows no damage, dings, or heavy corrosion, and the contrasting charcoal gray lower areas have been freshly painted. Expansive glass areas, a roll-out awning in good condition, and cool features like a spotlight with remote control, electric steps that deploy when you open the door, and dual A/C units on the roof are typical of Airstream’s top-of-the-line machinery. And quite honestly, this one heck of a good looking motorhome.

The interior is impressively clean and well-maintained, and despite being a product of the ‘80s, the décor is neutral and contemporary. Up front in the captain’s chairs, there’s a fully array of useful instrumentation that’s completely functional, monitoring the engine as well as the hydraulic systems that control the suspension. The power bucket seats are in excellent shape with no rips or tears, and the foam underneath is still supportive enough for a comfortable all-day cruise to the most remote areas. Neutral tans and beiges dominate the living quarters, and a wood parquet floor is easy to maintain and doesn’t collect dirt. Two chairs and a sofa comprise the living area, and a small 4-person dinette across from the galley means you don’t have to rough it when you’re in the wilderness. That galley includes a refrigerator/freezer that works on electricity and propane, a propane stove, and a sink. The appliances are all fully functional, as are the support systems, including the water tanks, pumps, and on-board generator. It includes an 80 gallon water tank, 6-gallon hot water heater, 43 gallon gray water holding tank, and a 45 gallon waste tank, as well as a 125 pound LPG tank.

Farther back you’ll find a small but functional head that offers running water and a toilet, across from a shower that’s actually spacious enough to enjoy a real shower. The master cabin in back offers a queen-sized bed, built-in mood lighting, ample storage, plus a TV and lighted vanity mirror. There’s even ample closet space and an independently-controlled HVAC system. Throughout the interior, all the lights, fans, and other systems work correctly, and it has been recently and thoroughly cleaned, so it’s ready to enjoy.

The running gear is a rugged, reliable GM commercial chassis. The 345 in the model designation stands for 34.5 feet long, and it rides on a massive 244-inch wheelbase (to the second axle). The engine is a powerful 454 cubic inch big block linked to a heavy-duty 3-speed automatic transmission, so it’s really no more challenging to drive than a regular pickup aside from the length. The engine starts quickly and easily, and runs well, having just completed a 1000-mile trip. Underneath, the heavy-duty chassis is undamaged and shows careful construction that is an Airstream hallmark. Heavy frame members ensure a sturdy platform, and since this vehicle spent most of its life in the southwest, rust is a non-issue. In fact, it’s so clean that it appears that the dual exhaust system is the original piece, and it remains tight and leak-free. The suspension soaks up bumps like a hovercraft, and the hydraulic and pneumatic systems are tight and leak-free. Gorgeous Alcoa aluminum wheels are a brilliant touch and have been recently polished and fitted with 8R19.5 Michelin tires, so it’s ready to go today.
