The original Ford Thunderbird, designed in late 1954 by William P. Boyer under the direction of Franklin Q. Hershey at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan Assembly Plant, answered America’s call for a stylish, domestic-built, high-performance, 2-seater sports car that still retained a measure of luxury, comfort, and refinement. An immediate success, production of the first generation Thunderbird ran from 1955 through 1957.
Improvements to the 1957 model year Thunderbird included an enlarged grill, reshaped bumper, larger and more pointed tailfins, larger rear taillights, revised spare tire placement within the trunk allowing more storage room, 12-volt electrical system, and engine options. The “E” Series engine option, as found in our example, included Ford’s “High Performance Special” 312c.i. V8 rated at 270 horsepower thanks to a more aggressive cam and two 4-barrel carburetors. Only 1,499 “E” Series (commonly called, “E-Birds”) were produced out of over 21,300 total in 1957.
Indigo Classic Cars proudly offers Serial Number E7FH173594, an exquisite example of the 1957 Ford “E” Series Removable Hard-Top Thunderbird finished in the correct Thunderbird Bronze Iridescent. Options fitted to this E-Bird include a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive and Town and Country Volumatic radio that adjusts volume with vehicle speed. It has received a full body off restoration with every correct nut, bolt, and color.
