Description

When the former George N. Pierce Company built this 36 ALAM hp 387 cubic inch T-head six Pierce-Arrow Model UU in 1909 it had few competitors for the title of the finest car in America. Built almost in its entirety in Pierces Buffalo, New York works, it was a paragon of the automobiles emerging technology. Pierces Great Arrows had swept the Glidden Tour reliability trials five years in a row, setting the bar high for its competitors at Peerless, Locomobile and Packard. This magnificent Pierce-Arrow 36hp Model UU has a history going back to the 1940s when its chassis was discovered on Long Island. After some years with interim coachwork it was restored in 2002 with this exacting re-creation of Pierce-Arrows cataloged Runabout coachwork. This was the pre-WWI vision of a sports car: low, elemental, powerful and responsive. Righthand drive -- like all proper automobiles of the time -- it is awash in brightwork, from the brass radiator, copper plated Rushmore acetylene headlights, brass Solar kerosene sidelights, bold eagle radiator mascot, steeply raked copper steering column, drum-style speedometer to the hoods copper plated highlights. Finished in deep green with matching button-tufted green leather upholstery on its three seats, it has been outfitted for convenient touring with an electric starter, discretely hidden alternator and fire extinguisher. The car was recently shown at the 2013 Amelia Island Concours where it was awarded Most Elegant Sportscar. It is a concours-quality automobile of the highest quality a charismatic automobile that is exciting sitting still. On the road it is reliable, exiting and quite fast.
