The loss of a Son is unimaginable by any parent. Now try and imagine what a man as passionate as Enzo Ferrari must have gone through when he lost his beloved son Dino. Unlike his father, Dino was formally educated in mechanical engineering. Dino worked side by side with all the engineers, learning and creating the engines and race cars that would win Ferrari championships. He was being groomed to carry on the Ferrari legacy. Unfortunately, this was all cut short by a devastating disease.
It was rumored that when Dino passed away, Enzo mourned deeply and the only color he would ever sign his name again in was Viola. This was possibly his tribute to his son or maybe just his uniqueness. Either way, this color has significance in the mystery behind the legend Enzo Ferrari.
Motorcar Gallery is proud to carry the mystery along by presenting 08070 246 GTS Dino Spider. This car arrived in Fort Lauderdale nearly 2 years ago as an average Dino that was thankfully rust free. Red in color at the time, we assessed the car as a really nice driver. We were pleasantly surprised that it had no “identity crisis”. This means there were no Ferrari badges added. This is how Enzo wanted it. Dino was to be a secondary marque in honor of his fallen son. Unfortunately Fiat did not let that fully happen but that is for another discussion. Upon removing the door panel to repair the window mechanism, we discovered what appeared to be the original color of the car: Purple! It was a bit of a shock but after some research it was learned that this was a factory color. Viola Metallizzato was a rare choice but further examination shows that there were 13 Dinos painted in this color, including one that was sold to a certain Mario Andretti.
After nearly 14 months of research, debate, polling and the usual blood, sweat and some tears, 08070 is completed. We performed a thorough cosmetic restoration that includes a bare metal paint job, all new seals, complete interior redo including new mouse-fur dash, carpets, and all black leather and vinyl surfaces. Mechanically, the records show a 4-corner suspension rebuild including a new steering rack, 4 rebuilt calipers and new fuel lines and fuel pump. Other records show the engine removed and a new 2nd gear syncro installed. At that time the engine was resealed and a valve adjustment performed. Our restoration process also includes new belly pans and the installation of the last brand new Ansa Exhaust system available in the USA.
There is one thing for sure. When you show up in 08070 you will be noticed and you will most likely be the topic of conversation. And there will be plenty to talk about.
