1932 brought Fords second revolution in the automobile. Faced with successful competition from Chevrolet and Plymouth, Henry -- with great secrecy -- trumped them all with the first mass-production V-8 engine, the famous flathead. Henry, ever the champion of simplicity however, didnt see the necessity for twice as many cylinders and 60% more horsepower. He thought the Model As four, updated, strengthened and better tuned to give 50 horsepower, should be more than sufficient so, masked by the hype and celebration of the V-8s arrival, an improved four continued in production as the Model B with a list price $50 less than a V-8. The V-8 caught on instantly, however, and by the end of 1933 the four was gone from passenger car production. Both models shared 1932s updated design with smaller wheels, rounded radiator shell and crowned fenders which was updated again in 1933 with a raked vee-shaped grille, slightly skirted front fenders, delicately-shaped bumpers and even smaller 17 inch wheels, a classical combination of contemporary features and functional design. One of the most rare of all 1933 Fords is this Model 40 4-cylinder Station Wagon. Only 359 were built (along with 1,654 V-8s.) This example is an older restoration of an original car including exceptionally rare original Iron Mountain wood assembled by Murray. Its color, patina and presentation highlight the quality of the material, which softens and complements the metal hood and fenders. This is an honest restoration of a solid original wagon, a tribute to its sympathetic care and maintenance over many years. In addition, it has three-row seating and a single sidemounted spare on the right. It runs and drives well, with the lovely exhaust note of Fords 4-cylinder engines that will catch the attention of onlookers who expect the burble of a flatheads exhaust from a Ford of this era. Finished in Tobacco Brown with black fenders, black upholstery and black vinyl composition roof, it is a great woodie to drive and a genuine find in this well-preserved and sympathetically restored condition.
