Description

1905 Pierce Great Arrow 28-32.
Here is a rare opportunity to own the earliest surviving example of the Pierce Great Arrow. Identical to the car that won the 1905 Glidden Tour driven by Percy Pierce. This car was acquired by Austie Clark in 1945 just after he returned from the war. It was clearly one of his favorites and was featured in several postcards and a beautiful painting by Leslie Saalburg which were sold in his Long Island Auto Museum. Austie named the car Percy. Ralph Buckley completed the restoration in 1950. When Austie drove it in the 1963 Glidden in Rochester, NY he commented in a letter to the AACA "We could have easily driven to and from the tour but used the trailer in case of bad weather. Actually Percy makes better road speed than the Chrysler with loaded trailer". In Austie's column in Old Cars Weekly he detailed the known history and his research which indicated that this is probably the actual car used by Charles Glidden on the 1905 Glidden Tour.

This is a most impressive high quality car. The cowl and seats are huge aluminum castings which were a hallmark of early Pierce bodies. The 4 cylinder engine and 3 speed gearbox give performance and flexibility to allow modern touring.

In 2001 the engine was completely rebuilt by David Greenlees. The wheels have been rebuilt by Bill Calimer using all of the original metal parts. Otherwise the car is as Austie and Ralph restored it. It now has a nice patina.
