Description

Triumphs TR series offered a slightly larger, 1991cc engine with a significant horsepower advantage over MGs 1489cc engine, 90hp in the Triumph to 73hp in the MG. Introduced in 1955, the TR3 bumped horsepower to 95hp and introduced a new small-mouth radiator air intake with an eggcrate grille to replace the TR2s tunnel. During its life Triumph incorporated many upgrades in the TR3, but none more significant than in September 1956 when Girling front disc brakes were made standard, only the second road car in the world to adopt front discs. The TR3s engine had already gotten a new high port cylinder head that raised its output to 100hp and Triumph further incorporated a stronger rear axle, Girling rear drum brakes and new bolt-on hubs for centerlock wire wheels. This 1957 TR3 roadster combines the smallmouth, eggcrate grille body with those mechanical developments in a nicely restored example in red with dark tan leather upholstery, brown carpets, a tan top boot and black leatherette soft top. Its equipment includes chrome wire wheels, a pair of Lucas Flamethrower driving lights as well as a set of side curtains for some protection in wet or cold weather. It is an older nut-and-bolt restoration with receipts from the mid-90s, documented with a photo album, that has seen limited and careful use subsequent to the restoration. The body, paint and chrome are good; the interior shows some use and wear, exactly as would be expected for a 15- or so year old restoration with good care. The engine compartment is thoroughly and thoughtfully detailed. It is an excellent driver-quality car that will show well and proudly among its contemporaries and reward its driver with scintillating performance from the 100hp engine and excellent braking from its front discs.
