Description

The Lincoln Continental has a long and storied history, and the handsome, powerful Mark III ably carried the torch in the early 1970s. Before fuel shortages and emissions controls, the 460-powered Marks were the gentlemans muscle car, full of luxury and performance in equal measure, and this Medium Green Metallic example is an excellent specimen. This suckers just too perfect and too shiny to have original paint, but they did manage to capture that funky 70s vibe with just the right amount of metallic in the finish. The bright green looks great on the Continentals chiseled bodywork, and it instantly gives you the unmistakable 70s feel. For many, the Mark IIIs styling is a high-water mark in the series, combining the square shoulders of the suicide door Continentals with the hidden headlight look that would dominate the 70s. And that low roof almost looks chopped, doesnt it? Wrapped in dark green vinyl thats in excellent condition, it works well with the Medium Green paint. Since the beginning, the Marks went light on the chrome, although the bumpers are excellent and the stainless trim that defines the fenders is bright and straight. The dark green leather interior welcomes you with supple high-backed seats that look like buckets but still allow true 3-across seating. Like an English study, you feel obligated to speak in hushed tones in the sumptuous interior, which offers plenty of woodgrained accents, original green carpets that are in great shape, and every power and convenience feature on the list. Five square instrument pods hold the gauges and clock, with the odometer showing just 79,202 miles, and although they cant be proven to be original, its been in the same family for 22 years, and after one spin behind the wheel, youll be a believer yourself. The A/C is still full of R12 refrigerant, which should tell you something about how well-preserved this car really is, and yes, thats real wood on the dash, not a simulation. Even the trunk is beautifully upholstered, and carries a full-sized tire and jack assembly with plenty of room to spare. Fords 460 was an evolution of the mighty 429, and in the Lincoln it was tuned to move all that sheetmetal with real authority. Making 365 horsepower, this is luxury muscle at its finest, easily able to run with Cadillacs 500 as well as plenty of other big-horsepower performance cars. Highly detailed, the engine bay shows you why this car is a consistent trophy-winner, with plenty of Ford Blue engine enamel, the ducted air cleaner, and the A/C compressor up top. Reliability is another kind of luxury, and youll note that theres a cooler for the power steering fluid, because this is a seriously heavy piece of hardware. Underneath, theres a robust C6 3-speed automatic gearbox and a 9-inch rear, along with a dual exhaust system thats muted, but powerful-sounding. Recent 235/75/15 whitewall radials have been fitted, so it just glides down the highway. A beautifully presented example thats already won 2nd place at the Lincoln Nationals, and is ready to cruise.
