Avid readers, you know we like Plymouths GTX. We get a lot of them through here, and with good reason -theyre cool, interesting, powerful, they look great...and we keep digging up the good ones! Take this car, for example: Clean Arizona sheet metal, brilliant red paint, an all new interior and clean details, and best of all, its a true 440, 4 speed, Dana 60 car...how could we resist? More importantly, how can YOU resist??
Heres the original fender tag broken down:
CAR: Plymouth GTX 2 Door Hardtop ENGINE: 440cid 4-bbl HP V8 TRANSMISSION: 4-Speed Manual Floor Shift TIRES: F70x14 Red Sidewall BUILD DATE: June 21, 1968. AXLE: 3.54 Rear Axle Ratio (Dana 60), Sure Grip INTERIOR: S6R Sport Trim Grade, Vinyl Bucket Seats, Red Interior. PAINT: PP1 Performance Red Paint. OTHER: Burgundy Metallic Upper Door Frame Color.

Lets start outside. The paint is blindingly red, flat and smooth. In GM land the paint work would be referred to as a body on job - the interior came out, the motor and transmission were pulled, the glass all came out and all of the jambs were finished to better than new, but the clean undercarriage was left untouched and original. The factory undercoating is in great shape underneath, so why disturb it? We like cars you can drive! As far as trim goes, its all polished original stuff, and if it was chrome it was replaced or re-plated. New door handles, a new antenna, new locks, re-chromed bumpers, highly polished and dent-free window moldings, a new windshield, restored taillights and finish panel, new lenses and more. New chrome road wheels holding new radial redlines and a slick new black vinyl top complete the exterior with style!
Hop inside. New black Legendary upholstery on new foam means youll be comfortable on long trips. It also gives you time to look around at all the other restored or new components in here - the door panels, armrest bases, armrest pads, door handles, carpet, headliner, visors and the floor mats are all new, while the gauges, dash, steering column, steering wheel and all mechanical bits have been carefully restored. BE/A provided the gauge lens and bezel, Real Time Engineering expertly restored the original tach and our shop painstakingly restored the original switch panel. Notice the gorgeous center console, with brand new console top plates/hardware, and a new shifter ball. Does it get any better? We want you to drive the car - you might as well be comfortable (and well informed) while doing it!
Peek underneath at the road trip-ready undercarriage. The front ends nice and tight, the brakes are adjusted right and the exhaust system with FlowMasters plays one heck of a soundtrack. We scraped a 1x2 section of the undercoating away to see what its like underneath, and we were as pleased as you will be. That original sheet metal from stem to stern is CLEAN -the product of its Arizona home before landing in Ohio for its restoration. A new clutch and Hurst shifter on the date coded 18 spline A833 4 speed transmission make changing gears a pleasure while the original DANA 60 with 3.54 gears and a Sure Grip out back can take all the abuse you can throw at it!
Under the hood youll find some serious attention to detail. The engine compartment and underside of the hood are loaded with clear for an unreal shine, as is the motor itself! The original air cleaner covers a brand new Edelbrock carburetor bolted to the original 440 Super Commando V8 engine. All new date coded hoses and wires are present, and all ancillary devices such as the alternator, power steering and other systems appear better than new. A new washer fluid reservoir, pump and lines are on the passenger side while a new Turbo Start group 27 battery, correct hold down and new battery cables are on the left. The correct Glen-Ray radiators topped by the correct cap, the right ballast resistor and date coded voltage regulator sit next to the rebuilt wiper motor, new wiring ties everything together - no stones left unturned here!
Time to step up to GTX- 68 cars are wicked quick and are the last of the understated B bodies. And unless you can afford a HEMI which you probably wont drive, a 440, 4 Speed, Dana 60 car in red is as good as it gets for the performance minded out there. Gorgeous in the sun and sultry at night this upscale beast runs with the best of em. With excellent paint, thorough execution and attention to detail, a fully rebuilt drive-train and 100 percent original sheet-metal, this is one to hold on to, whether youre into cruising or investing!
