Description

This 1968 Firebird coupe wears an unusual Autumn Bronze paint job, a smooth 327, and a ton of character. For its second year on the market, Pontiac didnt do much to revise the Firebird since sales were brisk and the shape was a flat-out homerun. The same can be said of the car today, with a compact shape that looks as if the sheetmetal were tightly stretched over the mechanicals. And speaking of sheetmetal, this clean southern car shows none of the usual F-body cancer in the usual areas. The vinyl roof is newer, showing no trouble signs underneath and a neat installation with no wrinkles. Badges have been fitted, and who doesnt love those cool Pontiac chevron-shaped side marker lights? The big chrome grille/bumper up front is in good condition, and the rest of the trim shines up nicely. The Pontiacs black interior is a simple place to enjoy a Saturday afternoon, with sporty bucket seats and lots of personality. The upholstery is in excellent condition, showing no splits or tears on any of the seating surfaces, and its quite likely that the rear seat and door panels are original. Newer carpets give it a finished look, and the original gauges are all functional. The woodgrained center stack shows you Pontiacs upscale vision for the Firebird, and a pair of auxiliary gauges has been mounted just below. The original AM radio is still in the dash doing its thing, again helping this cars honest image. The rust-free trunk shows signs of the original Autumn Bronze paint, and carries a full-sized spare tire. With 327 cubic inches worth of V8 under the hood, the lightweight Firebird is a deft performer. Clean, but not detailed for show, the engine features a few upgrades like an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor, as well as cosmetic niceties such as finned aluminum valve covers and a chrome air cleaner. Rams horn exhaust manifolds lead to a new dual exhaust system with Flowmasters, so it sounds appropriately potent for a Firebird, and the underhood area shows that this has always been a rust-free car. Underneath, its the same story with solid floors and no signs of tin worm, although it does appear that someone gave a try at cleaning up the original undercoating. The TH350 transmission shifts like it should and spins the original 10-bolt rear end. Pontiac Rallye II wheels are a Firebird tradition, and these have been fitted with 215/70/14 BFG radials. If youre looking for a first-generation F-body at an affordable price, youve just found a great one. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom.
