Exceptional rust-free car with ice cold factory A/C. Recent paint, new interior, detailed engine compartment. Fully sorted and ready to enjoy immediately.
Hailing from a collection full of superb, #1 quality vehicles and owned by an exceptional gentleman with well-known high standards, this lovely 1967 Skylark hardtop is the car he drives regularly to shows and cruise-ins around his home. Completely rust-free and incredibly solid throughout, it was the perfect foundation for a high-quality body-on restoration that unquestionably consumed a lot more than the asking price. The original Green Mist (code H) was replaced by Riviera Red, which was a correct 1967 color, albeit not on the Skylark. Nevertheless, it looks phenomenal in person, with laser-straight quarter panels, exemplary panel alignment, and great attention to detail. It appears that the bumpers have been refinished, all the stainless has been polished, and fresh Skylark badges have been installed as needed. The only real demerits are the rear taillight bezels, which are merely nice originals, showing normal shelf wear after 45 years, but the rest is so nice that you tend to go searching for flaws wherever you can find them.
Inside, an all-new black bucket seat interior was installed, matching the original factory setup exactly. Fresh seat covers, new carpets, and reproduction door panels were installed, and the headliner was hand-made and fitted, simply because the owner didn’t like how the one in the kit fit. He also installed a slightly fatter wooden steering wheel that looks great and provides a bit of heft in your hands, and the original gauges have been restored. This is indeed a factory air-conditioned car, and the system is fully functional thanks to an R134a upgrade. Buick was still offering the “Sonomatic” AM radio in 1967, and while it remains in the dash, a newer AM/FM/CD stereo head unit has been hidden in the glove box and powers a pair of 6x9 speakers on the rear package shelf. It’s also important to note that all of the weatherstripping, including the window channel felts and trunk gasket, has been replaced, making this one of the tightest, most rattle-free ‘60s cars we’ve ever experienced. And speaking of the trunk, have a look at the completely spotless original sheetmetal. A full-sized spare and jack assembly are also included, although not shown in the photos.
The engine is a 340 cubic inch V8 restored to original specifications. There’s bright Dante Red paint on the block, 340-2 decals on the valve covers, and a correct air cleaner up top. A newly rebuilt Carter 2-barrel carburetor has been fitted and as a result, it starts instantly and settles into an even idle immediately without any crankiness from the choke. It feeds a “Turbine 300” automatic transmission which has likewise been rebuilt and shifts crisply with quick reflexes out on the road. The front suspension was also fully rebuilt within the past year, and dual exhaust was added with just the right amount of sophisticated rumble for a vintage Buick. Gorgeous Buick Road Wheels will never go out of style and wear 215/70/14 Goodyear Eagle radials, but imagine how awesome this car would look with a set of redlines!
You’ll have a hard time finding a cleaner, more fully sorted Skylark than this. A screaming bargain compared to later models (which are themselves quite reasonably priced), this hardtop represents a lot of restoration time, money, and effort that would be impossible to duplicate at the asking price. V8 muscle, classic styling, and lots of luxury make this the ideal car for the weekly cruise-in, which is exactly how it is used today. Or, if you’re a genuine Buick fan, it’s not too far away from being ready for competition with a few small detail tweaks. And no matter what you do, it’s a ton of fun to drive and attracts attention everywhere it goes. Look like a million bucks for less than twenty grand, how awesome is that?
