The MGA sports car, built by the MG division of BMC was in production from 1955 to 1962. During that time, 101,081 were made, nearly all were for the export market, only 5,869 cars were destined for Great Britain.
The coachwork harkens back to 1952 when a designer employed by MG, notably Syd Enever – penned a streamlined body for George Philips MG-TD LeMans car. It was attractive, and a prototype was constructed and reviewed by Leonard Lord, chairman of BMC. Any possibilities for production were summarily dismissed, as BMC had just entered an agreement to produce the Austin Healey cars a few weeks prior. However, MG sales were in decline overall, so eventually the decision was reversed, and given the green light. This “first of a new line” model was so different from earlier MG’s it was renamed as the MGA.
Brighton Motorsports is pleased to present this highly-desirable and iconic 1961 MGA 1600 Roadster – equipped with the 78hp 1588cc engine which had been in production starting in 1959. The beautiful roadster benefits from a frame off restoration completed just under 2,000 miles ago by the second owner who had driven and enjoyed the car since 1968. It still has the original owner’s manual, tool kit and hand-crank. The engine has been totally rebuilt, bored, crank turned, new camshaft, & oil pump. Hardened Stellite valves and valve seats were installed to safely run unleaded fuel. It also has a new top and interior.
