1904 Moline side entrance tonneau
The Root and Vandervoort engineering company was setup in 1899, incorporated in 1900, and moved to East Moline Illinois in 1901. A portion of their engine output was sold by John Deer (Deer and Webber) of Minneapolis. The access to the John Deer sales force accounted for the early success or R&V. In 1904, R&V began production of its 2 cylinder-horizontal engine car of 12 horse power. The Henry Austin Clark and Beverly Kimes encyclopedia credits Moline with the first year production of 50 cars on page 986. The assumption is that production started with car number 100, as would be typical. Horseless Age in their issue of February 10, 1904 estimated the 1904 Moline production at 100, 2 cylinder 12 horse power touring cars.
This car, number 101, which would certainly be the oldest Moline is an older restoration with a new leather top, colors are dark blue and black. Documentation with the car shows that a Mr. Spealman of Chadwick Illinois had owned the car from 1904-1947.
