In 1966, Cadillac enjoyed its best ever sales and production year despite a general downturn in new car sales, remaining perched at the summit of the American luxury car market. In its final model year as a rear-wheel drive automobile, the Eldorado was offered only in convertible form and continued to display the crisp and elegantly restrained overall styling theme that was introduced in 1965. Mechanically, the Eldorado benefited from Cadillac’s traditional engineering excellence, with a 429 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 340hp and a massive 480lb/ft of torque, teamed with the excellent Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission that first appeared in 1964. Noise, vibration and harshness were reduced greatly as well, thanks to a newly patented ultra-quiet exhaust system as well as the improved box-perimeter frame, four-link rear suspension and revised engine placement. Just 2,250 examples of the Eldorado Convertible were ultimately built for 1966, and with their comprehensive standard features, great driving dynamics and open-air style, they are rapidly gaining the attention of astute collectors and enthusiasts today. The 1966 Eldorado Convertible offered here was restored to the highest standards with no detail overlooked, including the engine bay which displays near-perfect detailing. The incredibly straight bodywork is particularly notable for its excellent panel fit and is finished in black, complemented by a beautiful black leather interior, a black convertible top, triple-whitewall tires and excellent brightwork. Since restoration, the Eldorado has collected a number of awards on the show field, including AACA Junior, Senior and National First Prize awards. In keeping with Cadillac tradition, the Eldorado is thoroughly equipped for driving with a Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, as well as power brakes, power steering, tilt/telescopic steering, power front bucket seats and a center console. In addition, factory-installed air conditioning, power windows and vent windows, power door locks, a clock and an automatic headlight dimmer round out the appointments, along with an AM/FM stereo radio, the first such unit available in an American production automobile. With its award-winning restoration, this Eldorado is certainly one of the finest to remain in existence. Please contact us at 714-426-0238 or mark.drewitz@crevierclassiccars.com with any questions.
