Description

Over the years, Steve Saleen and company turned out some of the most desirable Mustangs the late model market had to offer. Delivering unparalleled performance, aggressive styling and built-in pedigree, their value as collector pieces was obvious from day one. In 1998, Saleen, Inc. celebrated their 15th year of operations by building ten exclusive Mustangs under the SA15 name. All units sold immediately, making the SA15 one of the most scarce and desirable Saleen cars ever produced. Were pleased to offer the opportunity to own number five of those ten cars. Seeing one of these Mustangs for sale is uncommon in itself but to find one in this condition is absolutely unheard of. With only 400 original miles, every piece of this SA15 retains its showroom glow. As both a genuinely enjoyable car and solid investment, late model Mustangs simply dont get better than this.

Thanks to designer Patrick Schiavone, the SN-95 Mustangs started out with great lines. With many elements from early Mustangs including the side air intakes and three-bar taillights, it was a true revision of the classic pony car. Being a 1998 model, this was the final year before Fords New Edge design theme kicked in and squared off all the corners. Looking over this SA15, its pampered life is obvious from fifty feet out. All the original body panels are still in place and every one of them is arrow straight. Drawing on the spirit of Henry Ford, Saleen allowed customers to order these cars in any color they wanted so long as that color was Bright Yellow. The paintwork on #5 still looks dealership fresh with no major imperfections visible. Kneel down and look at the front valance not even a rock chip. This car is seriously brand new.

Saleen cars always have plenty of unique styling cues and this SN-95 stays true to that. Up front, an aggressive front fascia fits snuggly under the composite hood. The center section of the hood is painted semi-gloss black with white outlines and supercharged script on the side in case anyone thinks this is purely a show car. The traditional Saleen banner hangs proudly across the top of the windshield. Along the sides, Saleen skirts sit underneath custom black SA15 graphics that terminate at the vent in front of the rear wheel. The factory mirrors have also been replaced by carbon fiber pieces. Up top, a rounded black light bar and fiberglass Speedster tonneau offer a custom look. Roll the windows up and the etched Saleen championship wreath becomes visible on the rear windows. Out back, a tall SR-351 wing mounts to the deck lid, casting its shadow over the Saleen rear valance.

Open the composite hood and youll find a OHC 281 cubic inch Modular V8. In a 1998 Mustang GT, these engines were good for 225hp and 285lb.ft. of torque in stock trim. Not exactly land speed material, but they were certainly fun daily drivers. The crew at Saleen took the 4.6 to the next level by adding a 90 cubic inch Eaton-based roots-type supercharger with a two-stage liquid intercooler. Alongside a custom Saleen tune and performance exhaust system, the SA15 produces 320hp / 390lb. ft. of torque. The added power is good for 4.8 second 0-60 runs and 13.3 second quarter mile passes. This bay is spotless and the engine in this SA15 remains exactly how Saleen built it with no further modifications.

Backing that 4.6 is a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission that channels power to a Saleen limited slip differential with 3.55 gears. The chassis is where Saleen cars typically shine and this one is no exception. Up front, hybrid McPherson struts with Saleen/Racecraft N2 struts and variable rate springs are mounted on the lower control arms. A 1.38 inch sway bar with urethane pivot bushings adds some additional stability in corners. Out back, a live axle with a four-bar link features a Quadra Shock system with Saleen/Racecraft N2 shocks and axle dampeners. Braking is handled by Saleen-branded brakes with 13 inch rotors and four-piston calipers up front with 11 inch rotors and single piston calipers out back. Steering comes courtesy of a rack and pinion setup. At the corners, the car wears 18 x 8.5 Saleen Anniversary five spoke wheels wrapped in sticky Michelin tires in sizes 245/45ZR18 and 295/35ZR18, respectively. Combined, these parts help the car achieve .93g in skid pad testing.

Inside this Mustang, a black and white Saleen interior invites you to hop in and hit the nearest road course. With only 400 miles completed, everything about the interior still has that new car feel. Supportive cloth-covered bucket seats are adorned with the Saleen and SA15 logos. Peer under the Speedster cover and youll find the same treatment applied to the backseats. A rounded light bar divides the two areas and adds to the cars aggressive demeanor. Once youre planted in the drivers seat, there are plenty of reminders you are in a Saleen car. From the white face gauges to the serialized console plaque, there is no shortage of branding. The steering wheel is a custom carbon fiber piece as is the shift knob. There is also a carbon fiber piece surrounding the radio and climate controls. The door panels are custom with body matched pieces bringing that bright yellow into the interior. The Saleen-designed race pedals are also outlined in yellow. The Saleen floor mats look as though no feet have ever stepped on them and the protective plastic is still on the Mach 460 head unit.

Documentation includes irreplaceable items such as the Saleen inspection hangtag and most of the original warning labels and advisory tags that are still in their original places. In addition, Saleen cars carry serialized engine bay plaques, console plaques and their production number on the front bumper so you can feel confident you are buying the genuine article.

Rarity ensures collectability but it doesnt guarantee a fun ownership experience. In the case of this Mustang, you truly get the best of both worlds a fun reliable car and a great investment. With only ten in existence, the chances to take home a genuine SA15 are few and far between. The chances to take home one with only 400 original miles? Well, this is probably it. Dont miss the opportunity to make SA15 #5 a permanent part of your collection.
