RK Motors Charlotte is unquestionably the home of the A12; you know, those killer Super Bees and Road Runners with lift-off hoods, 440 Six Pack engines, and four manual gears in the transmission. Weve sold more than just about anyone else, and our staff is comprised of experts who know these cars inside and out and can tell from 20 feet away whether theyre correct. Weve restored the two most valuable A12s in existence, the first one off the assembly line and the famous Project Six Pack racer.
Were not alone in our appreciation of these amazing machines, either, and nobody here at RK Motors Charlotte was surprised when the market for these cars took a big jump skyward. Recent auction results show that even non-numbers-matching A12s are red hot. Just a few examples include one at Barrett-Jackson with an automatic that sold for nearly $120,000 last month in Scottsdale, with no mention of matching numbers or documentation in the description. Or how about the Plymouth Road Runner A12 with a non-matching, modified engine that grabbed $121,000 last June? Or the non-matching-numbers unit that Russo and Steele offered, which fetched a tidy $90,000 final bid and crossed the six-figure barrier after all the fees were figured in. Then theres the one Mecum sold at their Dallas event back in October 2011, another non-matching A12 that netted a final number just over $100,000, again without any paperwork. And these are all garden-variety, non-matching examples! Even Sports Car Market magazine noted that at $120,000, even a non-numbers-matching piece was priced market correct. Now take a moment to consider what a documented, 4-speed A12 with its original, numbers-matching engine in a one-of-one color combination might be worth today...
Well, actually, you dont have to imagine it. RK Motors Charlotte is proud to present this totally unique, correct, matching-numbers A12 (as if they werent unusual enough on their own) restored by our own craftsmen and ready to start collecting trophies at the very highest levels. Seriously, have you ever seen an A12 with a white vinyl top? Im guessing the answer is, No, because this A12 is a documented one of one! As a huge fan of the unusual and odd, I love this one even more than the uber-rare Butterscotch one we had two years ago. And yes, we have a Chrysler Corporation Broadcast Sheet on the car to back up its unusual configuration, as well as the original Lynch Road fender tag that is still on the car.
As an RKM Performance Center restoration, you know the paint and body work are beyond reproach. We dont represent anything but the best of the best, and if its coming out of our own shop, it cant be anything but meticulously done. Arrow-straight bodywork? Of course. Gorgeous paint thats a mile deep? Obviously. Detailing that will pass muster at the Mopar Nationals and bring home a trophy? Absolutely. Ironically, while these cars were originally cheap and dirty racers for guys with only 3 or 4 nickels to rub together, this one has had a fortune invested in it to make it one of the nicest A12s on Earth. Panel gaps are excellent all around, and even the lift-off hood fits better than they did when they were new. The guys working on this car spent dozens, if not hundreds of hours sanding the body until every last wrinkle and wave was banished from the surface. Then the 2-stage Hemi Orange paint went on. We had this car parked next to the all-original survivor A12 on the floor, and the difference between this paint and the vintage 1969 stuff is mind-blowing. Dont get me wrong, original is cool, but anyone who sees this car in person will understand that theres just nothing like immaculate, deep, color-sanded and buffed urethane to make a car look like a million bucks.
And no restoration is complete without taking all the bright pieces to show-car levels, which is exactly what we did with this one. Emblems and badges are exact for the winning edge at a show. All the stainless glitters like a mirror, the chrome pieces are either freshly re-plated originals or excellent reproductions, and theres nothing here that is merely adequate. Over the top? Maybe, but for the enthusiast who wants the best, theres only one place to find it.
OK, so it looks nice. How does it run? Well, have a look under the hood. Thats the original, matching-numbers 440HP big block, fully detailed and covered in matching Hemi Orange paint. Up top, theres a correct Edelbrock 3x2 Six Pack intake with three 2-barrel carburetors complete with the proper choke and fast idle solenoid assemblies, all fed by that giant oval air cleaner that inhales deeply through the scoop on the lift-off hood. Theres a correct 054 radiator up front, hooked up to the motor by reproduction radiator and heater hoses with correct Corbin clamps. Date-coded spark plug wires connect to a rebuilt distributor and ride in reproduction wire looms. The batterys a group 25 reproduction item with the correct red caps, and note that the alternator pulley is the correct 2-belt piece, even though these cars never used the second groove (just like the Hemis). New cables, the correct PCV valve and a rebuilt master cylinder add to the look, and it was assembled and painted just the way the factory would do it, overspray and all.
Underneath youll find some of the finest metalwork weve ever seen on a car. Yes, the floors are new, but I challenge you to locate the seams. The guys in our restoration shop, Mike Velek in particular, went all-out to make these floors look original. Come in and have a look at the car and well put it up on a lift, and see if you can find where the fresh steel was stitched in. And once that was done, it was coated in a tidy layer of factory-style undercoating to make it look authentic and not over-restored, which is often the key to winning at the highest levels. Since this is an A12, after all, theres also a date-correct A833 18 spline 4-speed manual transmission feeding a stout Dana 60 out back with 4.10 gears and a Sure Grip limited slip unit. Theres a new dual exhaust system with all the correct hangers and polished tips, rebuilt stock suspension, and fresh brakes all around. Wheels are correctly stamped A12 steel units finished in basic black (hubcaps? We dont need no stinkin hubcaps!) wearing F70-15 Goodyear Polyglas redlines as original.
Inside, it is about as nice as they come, and like the white vinyl top, the black and white interior is a very rare find on an A12. A vast majority of these cars had black interiors, so finding one specd with an original white interior is a very pleasant surprise. The black carpets and dashboard keep it from being overwhelming, and all the soft parts are new, of course. Rebuilt gauges, including the Tic-Toc-Tach, live under a fresh dash pad, and tie in nicely with the restored steering wheel. The white seats feature new foam over the original frames, covered with exact reproduction seat covers that fit snugly and without the wrinkles you see on lesser restorations. The seat belts have been restored, and youre gonna need em with the acceleration this car can generate. The black headliner is also new and has been expertly installed with no sags or wrinkles. Sparkling white door panels finish the interior.
The trunk has been detailed for show with a correct jack and lug wrench and a matching spare, all tied together with a new reproduction trunk mat. And have a look under the deck lid for correct markings that have been duplicated using a low-mileage original as a guide ...For more information please call the seller.
