Chevrolets Chevelle was introduced on September 26, 1963 as a mid-sized member of the Chevrolet fleet. It was basically a smaller version of the Biscayne, Bel Air and Impala that were still strong sellers but did not fit in with the new trend of smaller cars. The mid-1960s were also the genesis of the muscle car craze and the entire Detroit market were striving to create cars that could be fitted with larger and more powerful engines. When introduced in 1963, its 327 cubic-inch V8 engine producing 300 horsepower was no match for the 389 cubic-inch V8 that the Pontiac GTO concealed under its hood, but internal GM rules, at least for a while, attempted to keep Chevrolets brand identity in its place.

The Chevelle was built atop a new A-frame platform and could be ordered initially as a two or four door. The base model was the 300 series while the Malibu SS was the top-of-the-line model. During the 1964 model year, over 76,800 Chevelle SSs were produced. Chevrolet began to catch up with the market, as well as its sister brands in the horsepower race. In 1966, no small-block Chevelle remained available. Rather, the 396 became the standard engine with the horsepower outputs offered between 325 and 375. The greater the horsepower, the more other components of the vehicle required upgrading. As a result, all Chevelles were outfitted with stiffer springs and shocks to counter handling problems. The SS name was switched to SS396 to highlight the 396 cubic-inch engine lurking underneath the hood. A new bumper, roof line, and dual hood scoops were applied for a more aggressive look. Front disc brakes came along in 1967 along with a three-speed automatic complementing other available transmission options.
