Renowned for their performance and handling, the racing cars of Colin Chapman eventually emerged on the road in the fiberglass unit bodied Elite coupe. It was followed in 1962 by the Elan roadster. With a backbone frame, stressed fiberglass body and potent twin cam engine, it was for many years the benchmark in lightweight small displacement performance. In 1967 it was joined by a long (96) wheelbase Plus 2 coupe with room for four (if two of them were small children.) Priced at nearly $6,000 in the U.S. (the price point of a Porsche 911), it found a market among committed, enthusiastic drivers who appreciated its barely one ton curb weight and 125hp twin cam engine, 4-wheel disc brakes, responsive 4-wheel independent suspension and superb roadholding. This 1971 Elan Plus 2S has been restored to better than showroom condition. Looking through the car it is apparent that everything has been disassembled and put back together with careful attention to detail, appearance and function. It rides on a set of Panasport 8-spoke alloy wheels with Michelin blackwall tires, is finished in Blue with black upholstery and has an AM-FM radio, wood dashboard and stainless steel exhaust. Underhood everything is crisp, fresh, clean and like new. The body and chassis rubber is like new. The craftsman who assembled this Lotus was proud of the workmanship and didnt hide the underbody and suspension under a coat of undercoat as well as documenting the restoration with photos, records and invoices. It is a pristine, exceptional example of the marque and model, ready to vindicate yet again Colin Chapmans reputation for superb, innovative thinking and one of the finest handling automobiles ever built.
