Description

If youve been watching the market, you already know that big Pontiacs are big money. Forget GTOs and Firebirds, the big cruisers like this Catalina are red hot right now, and for good reasons. Theyre roomy, comfortable, and surprisingly fast, not to mention good-looking. Pontiacs performance image was evolving in 1959, and its no mistake that they were putting big power into intermediate cars long before the term muscle car was invented. This beautiful Cameo Ivory Catalina was 1959s replacement for the Chieftain, and it presents in absolutely beautiful condition. Restored to original specifications, the paint has a soft glow thats entirely appropriate to the vintage and it still shows very well from front to back. Tailfins were definitely in fashion, and Pontiac was not sitting on the sidelines when they styled the 59s. Not quite as outrageous as the Cadillacs, the bodywork on this Poncho is straight and well-executed, with long, sweeping fins topped by slender chrome strips and finishing in round back-up lamps with their own little mini fins on top. The panels are straight enough to calibrate instruments by, and gaps are nicely done all around. Theres lots of chrome, because, of course, it was 1959, and it has all been refinished to show standards. The sweeping stainless trip highlighting the sides has been polished, and all the window surrounds are like new. The glass, which can be incredibly difficult to replace, is in excellent condition all around. The space-age interior is simply spectacular. Restored using correct finishes and materials, it epitomizes where auto design was headed in 1959. The seats have been upholstered in correct copper upholstery thats both stylish and comfortable, while the dash is painted a complimentary copper color. The carpets are pure 1950s cool with gold metallic flecks, and the jet styling extends to the incredibly cool steering wheel with an elaborate horn button. Gauges are simple round faces in their own pod ahead of the driver, but are augmented by a Pontiac manifold vacuum gauge (to measure efficiency), as well as a Pontiac tach. Aftermarket A/C has been added, making this a cruiser you can use any time. Powering this Catalina is Pontiacs erstwhile Super Duty 389 cubic inch V8, topped by a Tri-Power setup, which translates to 363 horsepower. The engine is bathed in Pontiac Turquosie, and the entire engine compartment is extremely clean and nicely detailed. Original features include a generator and master cylinder, as well as the original cast iron exhaust manifolds. The transmission is a 3-speed automatic driving the original rear end, which still hangs on the original leaf springs. The chassis is tidy, but not detailed for show and displays no evidence of previous damage or significant rust. A true dual exhaust system has been installed recently featuring Flowmaster mufflers for a great sound. And theres just nothing cooler than Pontiac 8-lug wheels, which wear modern blackwall radials for updated ride and handling on the open road. Wide track performance is back, and Super Duty Pontiacs have a growing fan base that is eagerly snapping up cars like this one. With an awesome color combination and a nicely done restoration, this is a car that will hold its value easily while being a grade-A cruiser. With a few modern upgrades like A/C and radial tires, its a no-compromises car that youll look forward to driving and can easily be pressed into service on those sunny days when you want an interesting ride to work. It also includes cool documents like the original bill of sale and owners manual, which only adds to this ones appeal. Get some Pontiac excitement and call today!
