This is a very rare, numbers matching 409 engine, 4 speed, and 12
bolt posi in a '65 Impala Super Sport! To sweeten the pot a bit
more it still retains its very desirable factory colors of Regal
Red paint and white interior! All the production codes and dates
line up perfectly. We sold the freshly restored car back in 2007 to
the collector that has lovingly cared for it since then. He
recently sold off his collection and kept this car as well as
another Impala for last because they were the rarest he had. He
repainted the car and maintained it as needed during his 17-year
ownership. We were lucky enough to purchase the car back from him
so it can be offered to its next caretaker and preserved for future
generations to enjoy.
This car was the end of an era! Only 2,828 409s were made, that's
only .2%! Over 57,000 396s were made. The great w-block 409-340
horsepower was phased out and replaced with a smaller 396-325 hp
engine in 1965. Only a few true muscle car guys ordered the
legendary 409 at almost twice the price of the 396. Have you ever
seen a '65 Impala SS with a 409? Pretty rare! Even car and driver
paid a farewell tribute to the blazing "409" in December of 1964
with a final road test.
EXTERIOR: The exterior of this car is said to be all original,
never rusted sheet metal! The factory Regal Red is a repaint from
the previous owner and has been neatly applied then sanded and
polished to a smooth reflective finish. Looking down the side of
the body it is absolutely straight as an arrow. All the panels are
correctly aligned, and the gaps are very consistent throughout. The
doors open and close like a new car. The front grill, bumpers, and
all trim pieces appear to be refinished with a vibrant shine to
them. All the Super Sport, and 409 emblems are in the original
positions. It has the correct factory SS spinner wheel covers with
215/75R14 white wall tires that complement the interior very
nicely. Oh yeah, gotta throw a compliment to the round taillights!
Everyone loves them including me!
INTERIOR: This rare factory white interior has many black accents
and is extremely appealing alongside the red exterior. Up front has
low back bucket seats that were reupholstered as well as the bench
in back. The optional front seat belts are original. It still has
the original center console with a working clock and correct chrome
reverse lock out 4-speed shifter that all looks fantastic. It also
has factory gauges and tachometer along with an Am-Fm radio in the
dash. The door panels, headliner, sun visors, and rearview mirror
were all replaced. The dash pad, dashboard, instrumentation,
climate control, radio, and knobs all look original and in great
condition. The steering column and steering wheel are likely
original and in fantastic shape. The dome lights and kick panel
lights are all working. Excellent carpet with reproduction floor
mats. Absolutely nothing disappointing about this interior!
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Under the hood is a site for sore eyes! The
original numbers matching 409 cubic inch engine with 340 hp is one
of the last for this breed. It runs spot on and has been freshened
up with new paint, hoses, and wires and maintained as needed. Up
top is the correct chrome dual snorkel air cleaner. The bow tie
valve covers have been chromed. It features power steering. The
alternator, brake master cylinder, and steering gearbox all look
fresh. The fender wells and underside of the hood have both been
painted satin black. The firewall is painted body color and the
original cowl tag is in place. What a rarity to have such an
original and good looking engine compartment!
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: The bottom side of the trunk lid and jamb are
painted slick just like the body. A reproduction sticker,
weatherstrip, and mat were replaced. The trunk pan metal is very
solid and has been sprayed neatly with spatter finish paint. It has
a new full-size reproduction 4 ply spare tire with jack assembly.
Complete and proper, just the way we like them!
UNDERSIDE: This is a nice looking undercarriage that has been
maintained as needed since restoration. All the steering components
look good and currently work well. The shocks and springs look like
they were replaced front and back. The front has a sway bar and the
links look fresh. The rear suspension is looking good also. There
are factory drum brakes at all four corners and even the emergency
brake is hooked up. It has a full dual exhaust system with fresh
looking mufflers. The gas tank looks new as well as the hanging
straps and hardware. It also looks like the fuel pump was replaced.
Looking up at the numbers matching 409 it has been freshened up
with factory color Chevy orange paint. Its correct canister style
oil filter is also in place. The numbers matching Muncie M20
4-speed manual transmission also looks fresh and clean. It
transfers power to the factory correct and date coded 12 bolt rear
end with 3.31 gears. The floors look solid and appear to be
undercoated from the factory. They have been freshened up with
black paint that was applied neatly and looks great.
SERVICE: Our team of professional mechanics has completed a
thorough inspection on this car and repaired or replaced the
following items: repaired the speedometer and replaced the valve
cover gaskets.
This was the last chapter for the legendary 409 cubic inch V8. The
1965 Impala SS is part of the final run of these big blocks and
this one celebrates that legacy correctly! What a significant
classic with major collector appeal!
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for
virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant
amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my
professional impression of the vehicle. Our salesmen are happy to
assist with descriptions and making sure your questions are
answered. One great suggestion is letting us do a walk around video
that explains the car's condition in detail. **These cars are
displayed in a museum. If interested in a particular car, make an
appointment with a salesman to see that car. Without an appointment
there is an admission fee to enter the showroom. If you buy a car,
your admission will be refunded, and you will be given a 1 year
membership.
