Vehicle Description
2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Coupe Jeff Gordon Signature
Edition
When we interviewed Ray Evernham, the former Crew Chief for Jeff
Gordon,on the Classic Auto Mall Show we learned that Jeff is not
only a great champion NASCAR driver, but also a decent human being
whose children's foundation raises money and awareness for research
and cures for pediatric cancer. In 2003, Chevrolet created the Jeff
Gordon Edition of the Monte Carlo SS and a portion of the proceeds
from each sale went to Jeff's foundation. Another example of how
the car world is one of the most philanthropic in the world.
For consignment, one of those 2,424 Jeff Gordon Editions, showing a
non-verifiable 6,595 miles on the odometer as the clean and clear
Pennsylvania title reads "Mileage Exempt". Monte Carlo's served as
the platform for several special editions including a Dale
Earnhardt Edition, a Tony Stewart Edition, and numerous pace car
editions. This is the ultimate NASCAR collectable and a clean and
comfortable car to boot!
Exterior
The special edition is identifiable by the Superior Blue paint over
Silver Metallic. Other specific features include the "24" on the
front plate, Jeff's signature on the back deck and rear pillars,
the Hendrick Motorsport logo on the rocker panels, 16-inch diamond
cut cast aluminum wheels, and dual stainless steel exhaust tips.
The exterior is in near immaculate condition with only some minor
scraping noted on the lower front fascia and some clear coat
degradationon one of the wheels. This generation Monte Carlo
presents a profile that is sleek and aerodynamic. The round quarter
windows lead to a swooping rear window that terminates at a
sculpted rear spoiler. The headlights and taillights are flush to
the body which can only help cut through the air, while the rear
sliding sunroof is a desirable feature.
Interior
Basic two tone door panels lead to two tone leather bucket seats
with a bright yellow 24 embroidered on each headrest. The rear
bench mirrors the palette and includes a pulldown center armrest.
The gray and black continues on the steering wheel and center
console shifter with a gray handle and black boot. Standard SS
gauges are a'plenty and as a reminder, a small yellow 24 is
situated in the gauge cluster along with another signature and the
Hendrick Motorsports logo. AM/FM/Cassette/CD radio is in the center
above the heater/AC controls. Yes kids, 20 years ago we were still
popping cassettes in radios and loving it! The molded plastics of
the interior, the low pile black carpet, and the gray fleece like
headliner all look spectacularly new. The trunk is lined in gray
flannel and is clean.
Drivetrain
GM's 3.8 liter V6, also known as the 3800, is under the hood. It's
transverse mounted and fuel injected with power going to the front
wheels through a 4L65 4-speed automatic transmission. These were
rated a smooth 200 horsepower, (about of what a NASCAR engine put
out in 2003). Power disc brakes are found on the front and the
back. The engine bay looks showroom fresh.
Undercarriage
Very clean underneath with only minimal surface rust. A single
exhaust flows back from the engine and splits past the gas tank and
enters two stock mufflers before exiting under the rear bumper
cover. Both front and back have independent suspension.
Drive-Ability
There's a strong fanbase for this generation Monte and why not?
They're sleek, comfortable, easy to drive, and to manythey are good
looking cars. Quiet on the inside as we hit the test loop to
confirm that this low mileage car runs, stops, and functions. It
certainly doesn't feel 21 years old, even if the platform is no
longer in use.
As expected, everything works as it should. If you're over 30, you
might remember that these Monte Carlos were everywhere. Good
looking daily commuters with the reliable 3800 and room for the
kids and their equipment. It's possible these special edition
versions will become even more collectible when the cars hit the 30
year mark. We're not sure what the next Radwood will be called, but
early 2000 era cars will have their day in the sun and be
remembered fondly. Here's the opportunity to buy a rare version of
a common car.
