Vehicle Description
Chassis No. WP0ZZZ99Z2S698080
Just weeks after the arrival of the 996-generation 911, the first
of the water-cooled racers, dubbed the GT3 Cup, was introduced for
the 1999 Porsche Supercup Series. Its 3.6-liter "M96/74" flat-six
initially produced 365 horsepower and offered considerable
performance on track, with further performance arriving in the form
of a 2002 update featuring improved aerodynamics and cooling,
Turbo-style headlights, a lightened exhaust system, and an output
increase to 375 horsepower.
This particular GT3 Cup was desirably completed in 2002 model-year
specification and was successfully campaigned by Jrgen Alzen
Motorsports / Porsche Zentrum Rhein Oberburg during that year's
Porsche Supercup season. In the capable hands of eventual two-time
(2010, 2017) 24 Hours of Le Mans-winner Timo Bernhard, the then UPS
Porsche Junior driver piloted the GT3 Cup to four podium finishes
over nine races during the 2002 season including Austria,
Hockenheim, and both rounds at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In
addition to Bernhard claiming an impressive third place in the
championship standings, the car was also campaigned by eventual
2016 24 Hours of Le Mans-winner Marc Lieb in the sixth round of the
season at Silverstone, where he achieved a fifth podium finish.
Following its tremendously successful period racing career, the GT3
Cup was treated to a complete disassembly, inspection, and
recommissioning courtesy of Scan Automotive in Vancouver, BC,
Canada from 2018-2019 - photo documentation of which is on file.
This included a repaint in its original shade of Carrera White
(LB9A) and reapplication of its original red and blue racing
livery. Additionally, under previous ownership, the engine and
transmission are understood to have been completely rebuilt by
Autometrics Motorsports, with just 15 hours of use since its
completion.
The opportunity to acquire an accomplished factory racer that has
been campaigned by multiple 24 Hours of Le Mans winners is
incredibly rare, let alone an example that has been so meticulously
recommissioned to as-raced specifications as this outstanding GT3
Cup has. Today, this Porsche race car would make an exciting
addition to any collection of performance Porsches or an ideal
candidate for many historic racing events and series.
