Vehicle Description
1967 Chevrolet Camaro Hardtop SS396 Tribute
Of the 220,906 Camaros built in 1967, 34,411 of them had the Super
Sport package which included some cosmetic additions along with one
of three engines; a 350ci producing 295 horsepower, or one of two
396ci big block engines producing either 325 horsepower or a
whopping 375 horsepower. When the average horsepower of American
cars at the time was about 180, any of these options would have
been a major boost of performance.
For consignment, a hardtop '67 Camaro that pays tribute to the 396
SS by actually having one in the engine bay! This is not a clone
per se, but it's an incredibly clean and straight Camaro with a
period-correct big block and some cosmetic cues but was not born a
true SS396 car.
Exterior
The Nantucket Blue on a stripe-less car just looks great. The
gleaming paint is complemented by shiny brightwork and chrome
bumpers that need nothing. The trim and SS emblems along with the
396 badges all look fantastic. Our consignor states this car has
never been shown, but it's certainly worthy. 15-inch Chevrolet
rally wheels provide the footwear with BF Goodrich tires that have
a late 2020 date code. A cowl hood is to the front as the rear
spoiler is to the back, this is all about performance and
aggressive good looks. The paint is stunning, but we note some
imperfections including an area of small bubbling, a crack in the
paint on the rear pillar, and some flaking in the drip rail. The
chin spoiler is cracked with some repair, and there's a scrape on
the rocker panel trim piece.
Interior
Very fine black vinyl covers the door panels, front bucket seats
and rear bench. We note no rips or tears. The three spoke, wood
rimmed steering wheel is in great shape and leads to the very basic
and stock dashboard and gauge cluster. The center stack has the
heater controls and a Craig AM/FM/Cassette radio from a later era.
Below that and mounted under the dash is a trio of added Sunpro
gauges to monitor temperature, amps, and oil pressure. A Hurst
shifter stands straight and tall, perched on the transmission hump
on the floor. The headliner has some sag but is in otherwise good
condition. Black loop style carpet covers the floor in decent
condition and the footwell trim in general looks good. The trunk is
clean and lined with a loose fitting plaid mat.
Drivetrain
A 396ci V8 sits in the clean engine bay and is topped by an
Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor sitting atop an Edelbrock intake
manifold. Chrome valve covers are complemented by a large chrome
fan shroud, orange block, and yellow wires. The hood pad of the
functional hood is in very good condition. The conductor of the
drivetrain is a Borg Warner T10 4-speed manual transmission which
sends power to the rear 10-bolt and 2.73 gears. Power brakes are
supplied with disc up front and drum in the back.
Undercarriage
Generally clean and dry underneath with some surface rust on
untreated brake components, the headers, and other parts of the
exhaust which intersect with Flowmaster mufflers and exit
discreetly behind the back wheels. Coil spring suspension is found
up front and leaf springs with traction bars are out back. We note
some oil on the rear diff and suspect it might be coming from the
pinion seal.
Drive-Ability
The car started right up and sounded great. This is a solid running
car with a beautiful coat of blue paint so we were thrilled to find
it accelerating, turning, and stopping well. There's just something
about a manual drive big block car from the 60's that is unlike
anything else! Everything worked as it should save the reverse
lights that would not illuminate.
If the first gen Camaro is your dream car, take a close look at
this one because it is very, very nice. You get the benefits of the
big block and some styling cues from the SS without the hefty price
tag. As mentioned, this car was enjoyed but not shown. Your choice,
but here's one you can confidently take to cruise nights, Cars and
Coffee, your local show, or Camaro Nationals here at Classic Auto
Mall in July!
