This 1965 Ford Mustang convertible with the Palomino pony interior is in very good condition and was fully refurbished in the early 2000s before I acquired it in 2013. Finished in burgundy over tan vinyl upholstery, the car is powered by a 289ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. It is equipped with a tan convertible power top (works perfectly), an aftermarket taillight cover, driving lights, front disc brakes, and 14″ styled steel wheels in addition to front bucket seats, a Mustang-branded cassette stereo, a removable center console, air conditioning, Rally Pac gauges, and a dual exhaust system with Dynomax mufflers. I have owned the car for 10 years and have all service records during that time. I addressed a number of mechanical items during this time. Details are provided further in this description.
The car was finished from the factory in Vintage Burgundy and is equipped with a power-retractable tan soft top with a vinyl rear window. An aftermarket taillight cover is fitted, and additional exterior details consist of chrome bumpers, driving lights, dual side mirrors, faux quarter panel vents, and polished rocker trim. Styled 14″ steel wheels with red Mustang-logo center emblems are wrapped in Lemans SR white-letter tires measuring 215/60. The car comes with power steering. Braking is handled by power-assisted front and rear drums. I replaced the shocks, brakes, and brake master cylinder during my ownership.
The front bucket seats and rear bench are upholstered in tan vinyl with Interior Decor Group-style embossing on the backrests. Matching upholstery extends to the removable center console with cup holders, and additional appointments include lap belts for the front occupants, vent windows, air conditioning, rubber floor mats, and a Mustang-branded cassette stereo. The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts a horizontal 120-mph speedometer flanked by gauges for fuel level and engine temperature. Rally Pac gauges mounted to the steering column include a 6k-rpm tachometer and an analog clock. The speedometer was replaced in June 2018, and the five-digit odometer and currently has 1,994. miles since that time. Total mileage is unknown.
The 289ci V8 is equipped with a 12-volt electrical system as well as a polished air clearer assembly and matching valve covers. The rear main seal was changed in 2021, and additional work also includes replacing the water pump, radiator, harmonic balancer, right exhaust manifold, spark plugs, ignition wires, and oil pressure switch along with the fuel tank, filter, and sending unit. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a C4 three-speed automatic transmission. The car’s dual exhaust system is equipped with Dynomax mufflers, and the pinion shaft seal was replaced in 2021. The aftermarket tail light gives the car a unique look, however it can be removed if you want to install stock tail lights. Overall the car runs very well with no mechanical issues.
The data plate was painted over during previous ownership and lists a vehicle warranty number that is consistent with a 1965 Mustang convertible built in Dearborn, Michigan, and originally powered by a 289ci V8 with a two-barrel carburetor. Decoding the trim tag reveals the following information:
