In early 1996, the vision for the R230 became reality, after which a thorough development process was initiated. Designing began on 27 January 1996, with submissions of concept designs by ten designers from Germany, California and Japan. Hundreds of sketches were made, resulting in the creation of 12 quarter-scale models, which were later digitised for computer manipulation.
Design evolution: The design of the R230 broke traditional boundaries, using advanced technology such as the "CAVE" (Computer Aided Virtual Environment). Here, a supercomputer was used to convert quarter-scale designs into life-size images, allowing designers to perfect every detail.
The SL R230 offered several engine configurations, ranging from a 3.0-litre V6 to a 6.0-litre Bi-turbo V12, with various superchargers and eight-cylinder configurations in between! Our version? Originally from Germany, equipped with the 5.0L V8 and virtually every possible option ticked. Always meticulously maintained and recently given a comprehensive service. An additional sports exhaust system and AMG rims give this hardtop convertible a distinct look it absolutely deserves!
