Vehicle Description

1990 Xplorer 230 B-Class Motorhome
California Van, 89K Miles

1990 Xplorer 230 B-Class Motorhome for sale with just 89,276 original miles. This was a 1-owner vehicle with 88k until I purchased it in early 2020. As a small classic/specialty dealer, I had a Ferrari 430 for sale. I got a call from a gentleman and Arizona whose aunt had recently passed away, he wanted to buy my Ferrari but needed to put those two cars towards the purchase to remove them from her property in Santa Barbara which they were beginning to remodel. At that same time, I had been watching a lot of van life videos and thought it would be cool to have a B-class. On a trip down to my place in Orange County I stopped in Santa Barbara and looked at her one-owner 1967 Camaro RS Convertible and this 1990 Xplorer she also bought brand new. I was excited and we made a deal.

For the better part of the last 3 years, we have been working on and off since this low-mileage Dodge had spent the last several years sitting. now and I would be taking it on long road trips I wanted to be confident it could make it anywhere. This is where the journey began and I learned exactly just how expensive and time-consuming it can get to put even a low-mileage old RV back on the road in tip-top shape.

First, we did all of the obvious. New tires, shocks, batteries, tune-up, and brake work. Next, I noticed noise coming from the rear end and I sent it to a repair shop that specializes in rebuilding rear ends. Then the drive shaft, U-joints, and motor mounts. After a transmission service, we noticed that the new fluid was pretty dirty so we pulled the transmission and sent that out to be rebuilt. While that was getting done we rebuilt the air conditioning system, charging system, and cooling system, a new rear bumper was installed, and a new stereo system with new speakers and a backup camera. All systems were tested/serviced as needed and in excellent working order. We serviced the Onan generator (which has only 49 hours on it) and many other items. I was excited early last summer to get the transmission back and reinstalled and it seemed I was ready for my first trip. I called my transporter and had him bring it down to my shop in Orange County so I could head off on a fun camping trip with my cousins in San Simeon.

Once at my shop in Costa Mesa, I spent days polishing and detailing the exterior. I had the interior professionally detailed as well.

We made it to San Simeon and back with no issues other than it appears the transmission rebuild wasn't the greatest and was starting to leak and slip a little. When I returned I took it to a local transmission shop with a great reputation called Leon's in Costa Mesa, have them replace a couple of external seals that may have been causing the leaks but to no avail, the transmission is slipping particularly in the takeoff gear. I called the shop in Vallejo and they said to bring the transmission back and they would completely go through it again but at this point, I would need to ship it back to Sonoma, pay the labor for the removal, and the reinstallation and in the end, I still wouldn't have a nationwide warranty. All said you're getting an incredibly well-serviced and completely gone through low mileage Xplorer with a transmission that is slipping. My recommendation to the new owner is to have it professionally rebuilt by a shop with a National Warranty. Other than that, this Xplorer is ready to roll.

The tire carrier cover (not shown) is included. The amount of documentation from new is insane (see photos) with all manuals, purchase receipts, and more. I have kept a running tab of the amount spent on this unit - about $19,000 which I don't expect to recoup. But someone will get a great unit needing just a transmission rebuild and perhaps some cosmetic attention if they desire.

The Xplorer is located at my shop in Costa Mesa and can be seen by appointment. It has a clear, California title, and registration is current through 8/16/24.
