In what might be one of the most love-it-or-hate-it cars ever made,
it's hard not to admire the fervent excitement VW lovers seek out a
car like this 1973 Volkswagen Thing. Having only been imported into
the U.S. for two short years, they are a rare sight to behold,
especially one with 32,730 believed actual miles on the odometer.
And it's hard to miss this one in its bright yellow respray, white
convertible top, and black trim. Inside, this Thing displays a
minimalist interior that would make Tesla blush. The black vinyl
seats at both front and rear complement the single-gauge dashboard
and four-spoke steering wheel.
The rear-mounted 1600 CC four-cylinder engine is stamped AE 691778,
which indicates a 50-hp motor from 1970 or '71. A one-barrel
carburetor feeds the engine, while a stock manifold does away with
exhaust gases. A four-speed manual transmission keeps the driver
engaged with a torsion bar front, and an independent rear
suspension keeps this Thing riding high. A set of two-piece wheel
covers sporting the Wolfsburg crest (as opposed to the traditional
VW) sit shod in 195/75R-14 rubber at all four corners. Classic
drums at both front and rear handle braking to give the Thing an
authentic driving experience.
