Vehicle Description
1988 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
Regarded as one of the most significant drivers in NASCAR history,
Dale Earnhardt won a total of 76 Winston Cup races over the course
of his career, including the 1998 Daytona 500. He also earned seven
NASCAR Winston Cup championships, tying for the most all-time with
Richard Petty. This feat, accomplished in 1994, was not equaled
again for 22 years until Jimmie Johnson in 2016. His aggressive
driving style earned him the nicknames "The Intimidator", "The Man
in Black", and "The Count of Monte Carlo". Also, his success at the
restrictor plate tracks of Daytona and Talladega earned him the
nickname, "Mr. Restrictor Plate".
Our consignment, this 1 owner 1988 Monte Carlo which was bought new
because the purchaser was a NASCAR nut and loved Dale Earnhardt. It
is all original excluding the tires, (from 2019). Always garaged
and never smoked in this adult driven sample is an original if
there ever was one! Our consignor states it was only driven on a
highway on its way to our Hallowed Halls here at Classic Auto Mall.
It is showing a consignor stated 5,759 miles however it is unknown
if these are original as the title read mileage exempt.
Exterior
With the nickname of "Intimidator" what could be a better color
than black? Well, how about Dark Maroon Metallic? Then throw on
some red stick on striping around the wheel wells and mid sections
on either side and on the bumper tops in front and rear. Add on an
SS sticker on the door panels, blacken the grille, add a window to
the B pillar, a spoiler to the trunk lid and two corner taillights
on a swooping down rear panel. Slight scratching and light areas of
cracked paint, are noted throughout on the steel which has nicely
minded gaps. The top has some removable panels of smoked glass and
covering for these are in the trunk. Neoprene body matching colored
bumpers give the car an aero look. The racy look comes from the
aluminum wheels which play with satin and shiny silver paint to
accentuate their form. Raised white letter tires are on all 4
corners.
Interior
Maroon crushed velour with maroon vinyl bolsters are seen for the
front high backed buckets and rear bench seats. These have maroon
vinyl in the bolsters. A console also in maroon races from the back
of the buckets to the dash where we see a storage box and the
shifter housing. Factory air, along with power windows, power
steering and power locks, as well as a toggle for the driver's
mirror are the options that came with the original car. No fading
is seen on the door panels next to the window openings, and these
are showing as excellent. The carpet appears in good condition, and
carpeted floor mats are installed in the front and rear of the car
all are covered in plastic. A plastic maroon headliner covers the T
top structure. The dash has the optional gauge package installed
and presents clean and in the square and rectangle design
pattern.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in the factory engine bay is a 305ci V-8 with a
4-barrel carb on top and attached to a 200R4 4-speed automatic
transmission that throws power to the rear wheels via a 3.73:1 10
bolt limited slip differential. This was standard setup for the
1988 Monte Carlo SS. All within a highly detailed clean engine
bay.
Undercarriage
F41 sport suspension is mounted to a clean and rust-free frame and
undercarriage, (floor pans, wheel wells, and rockers). Floor pans
have factory overspray on them. Independent coil spring suspension
is on front along with power disc brakes and on back power drum
brakes work with a 4 link with coil spring suspension. Dual exhaust
that is nice and clean is noted.
Drive-Ability
Always a pleasure to drive one of these, and this one is in
fabulous condition. It fired right up and on the test track cruised
and bruised when I put the accelerator to the floor. Solid panic
stopping which was bias free, and good handling. All functions were
functioning as they should save for the AC which blew warm.
A 1 owner car, owned by a NASCAR fan who really cared for this car.
Is still in very good condition, and could easily be a daily
driver. Nice colors and aero exterior with the gauge package
interior. Boogity Boogity Boogity! (Can I say that??)
