Vehicle Description
Continuing to epitomize America's fine-car market during the early
1930s, Packard's Eleventh Series model range continues to rank
among the company's finest. Debuted in August 1933, they featured a
wide range of handsomely styled bodies based on Raymond Dietrich's
foundational design language established in 1930. Masterfully
streamlined updates for 1934's Eleventh Series models were
contributed by Alexis de Sakhnoffsky, likely the most highly
acclaimed stylist of the era. Featuring beautifully skirted fenders
and V-shaped radiator grilles, the Eleventh Series Packard models
possessed a style and grace matched by few, if any, competing
marques at the time. Numerous welcome mechanical updates typified
Packard's Eleventh Series and delivered an outstanding driving
experience with greater ease of operation than ever before.
Positioned between the Eight and Twelve lines in Packard's broad
and versatile model hierarchy, the Super Eight was offered in three
variations, including Model 1103 on the 134-7/8" wheelbase chassis,
Model 1104 on the 141-7/8" wheelbase length, and Model 1105 on the
146-7/8" wheelbase, with the difference taken up by hoods of
various lengths. Ample power was delivered by Packard's
whisper-quiet L-head 385 CI inline eight-cylinder engine developing
145 BHP. Just 1,920 Super Eights of all models and body styles were
built for the 1934 Eleventh Series. While all surviving Eleventh
Series Packard models are highly prized, this Super Eight
2/4-passenger Coupe Roadster continues to benefit handsomely from a
gorgeous and exceptionally well preserved restoration. A truly
refreshing find without the customary side mounted spare
wheels/tires and the long shuttered hood and cowl fully visible,
this Super Eight remains in show-quality condition throughout,
including the body, Maroon paint finish, Black soft top, and
gleaming brightwork. Delightful period accessories include twin
chrome Pilot Ray accessory lights, a Packard "goddess" radiator
mascot, and rear spare in a body-color steel case. A visually
striking set of chrome wire wheels and new period style Firestone
Blackwall tires impart a decidedly sporty look. This is quite
simply a visually stunning machine from all angles, the proportions
border on perfection, thanks in no small part to the grand 142"
wheelbase of the Super Eight chassis. The interior compartment is
comfortably trimmed in maroon leather and matching carpeting, which
is in great condition with only small creases visible to the
seating surfaces. A fully trimmed, matching rumble seat enhances
the enjoyment for two additional passengers as desired. Housed
within a striking burled weed grain dash is a jewel-like instrument
panel includes a large, easy-to-read speedometer with odometer and
trip odometer, plus gauges monitoring oil pressure, fuel level,
coolant temperature and amperage, plus a precision Waltham 8-day
clock and rare AM radio. Glove boxes to each dash side heighten
convenience and privacy. Packard's big 384.8 cubic inch L-head
inline eight produces a silken 145 horsepower and an ocean of
effortless torque. It puts power through a three-speed manual
gearbox which is known for its ease of operation and smooth
shifting. Every car enthusiast should experience driving a Packard
of this era at least once, as they are surprisingly tractable,
incredibly smooth and remarkably easy to drive for such a large and
grand car. The 11th Series Packard had few peers in its day, and
the same sentiment rings true today. When new, they were coveted
for their style, performance, and refinement, and today's
collectors cherish these magnificent automobiles for the same
reasons. This 1104 Coupe Roadster is no exception. Recognized by
the Classic Car Club of America as a Full Classic, it eligible for
an enviable array of concours, shows, and touring events, or simply
as a most satisfying motorcar for casual weekend outings. Offers
welcome and trades considered. For additional details please view
