When one thinks of Mercedes-Benz autos, automatically the vision
settles on engineering excellence, classic subtle styling, a high
degree of luxury, and great performance and drivability. Over time
it would be hard to imagine any other car maker holding the premier
spot in the personal luxury performance car market. Beginning with
the introduction of the incomparable 300SL of the mid-fifties, to
its baby brother the 190SL of the late fifties and early sixties,
there has been a steady evolution of ever improving versions, each
adding new levels of sophistication, elegance, and performance. In
1972, the M-B 450SL W107 became the replacement for the wildly
popular 230/250/280SL series W114. It ran through 1980 with an
annual production averaging about 6,000 vehicles per year. Initial
improvements included an overhead cam 4.5L V8, 4-wheel disk brakes,
fully independent suspension, and fuel injection. While the SL was
a convertible, one important option was a removeable hard top. The
1979 model produced 180 HP and 220 lb/ft of torque giving a great
performance profile. Care for the driver and passenger came in the
form of many standard features such as climate control and leather
interior. Eastern Shore Classic Cars is excited to offer this 1979
Mercedes-Benz 450SL for sale. It is an amazing example of this
great automobile. The current owner purchased this car from the
second owner in 2013 showing approximately 39000 miles. That owner
(a friend) held the car from 2000 - 2013. He purchased it from
Mercedes of Naples, Florida. It was the daily driver of the
franchise owner's wife and was maintained exclusively by the
dealer. During its "current life," it has been driven sparingly -
trips to get ice cream; short outings into the Connecticut country
side. Just pure pleasure driving. There are other examples of this
car out there, but very few have received the love and care that
has been lavished on this one. Now at approximately 44,000 miles on
the clock, it certainly fits the category of a low mileage,
meticulously maintained driver that will hold its own at any local
show. Recent maintenance includes new tires and top installed just
as Covid shut us all down. As things have opened up for more
regular use, it has been treated to new brakes, a 4-wheel
alignment, wheel bearings checked and repacked, oil change,
complete under hood inspection. The original paint is virtually
flawless; the original interior shows no wear or damage, and the
bright work sparkles. In 1978 Mercedes introduced all aluminum 14''
wheels. This car is equipped with M-B's spectacular optional chrome
wire wheels. They are in excellent condition with no signs or
corrosion or deterioration. The air blows cold; the gauges all
work; the radio plays as it should. It comes with the optional
removable hard top (see pictures with and without top). A portable
storage stand for the hard top is included. Driving this car is one
of life's little pleasures. On one hand it is a boulevard cruiser
that catches everyone's attention - sedate, smooth, quiet. Yet,
when called on, it delivers exciting performance and handling as
only a Mercedes can. While the owner does not have to sell at this
point, age and health issues have caused him to use it less and
less. It is time for it to be enjoyed by a new keeper, someone who
will love it and maintain it as he has. As with any significant
purchase, it is highly recommended that the prospective buyer or a
well-qualified and trusted representative inspect the car in
person. It is being sold on a bill of sale (CT does not issue
titles for cars that are over 20 years old), as is where is with no
warranty offered or implied. Come drive it away for $18,000. For
