Vehicle Description
1982 Chevrolet Corvette Collector's Edition Coupe
The 1982 Collector Edition was the first Corvette with a hatchback
rear window, foreshadowing the C4 Corvette. A special color scheme
was used inside and out and Collector Edition badges were featured.
The special, exclusive aluminum wheels were designed to look like
the optional bolt-on wheels of the 1967 model. The Collector
Edition had an ''0" in the sixth digit of the VIN rather than the
"8" found on standard Corvettes. This was the first Corvette to
sell for more than $20,000, with a base price of $22,537.59. The
Collector Edition had limited availability and 6,759 were produced
out of a 1982 total Corvette production of 25,407.
Offered for consignment, this Collector Edition Corvette right out
of 1982 that presents in very good condition. Some paint flaws and
minimal scratching are showing, however this example is still
running strong and is 1 of only 6,759 produced. An overall very
clean and nicely presenting car with an interesting "space age"
interior, numbers matching drivetrain and the removable roof panels
which are bronze tinted glass. Combine that with the 12,217 title
verified actual miles, Crossfire Injection, and the original build
sheet all to form one seriously collectible Collector's
Edition.
Exterior
Silver beige paint was the color of every 1982 Collector Edition
Corvette produced, and this is no exception. Dark brown curvaceous
pinstriping wraps around the passenger compartment and highlights
the fenders. A gray to black fade is seen on the beltline door
panel and makes its way to black ending in the front quarter
panel/air vent. The same gray to black to brown fade decaling
appears on the hood as well. The all fiberglass body is in good
condition, bathed in the original application of Silver Beige
Metallic paint, but sporting a few very slight chips and scratches
that one must look hard to find. Bronze tinted glass "T" tops,
which are removable and come with their storage bags are scratch
free and clear. A hatchback style operable window covers the rear
deck. Unique wheels, turbine style patterned after the 1967 model's
bolt on alloys are wrapped in new in 2021 correct 255/60R15's are
also unique to this commemorative edition. Crossfire injection
badging is seen as well on the exterior as are the iconic quad of
round tail/signal lights.
Interior
Metallic Silver/Beige "spacesuit style material" seating has
horizontal multi shade silver brown hue panels on the bucket
seating. The seats are showing a bit of wrinkling to the material,
but no tears or fading is noted. This pattern is mimicked on the
door panels, with the lower door panels wrapped in smoked gray
carpet. This same carpet in good condition is seen throughout the
cabin and even in the stowage hatch area remains very clean.
Storage bags are seen in the rear to keep the T-tops scratch and
mar free when removed. Things are very clean inside, clean enough
to wonder if we stepped into a time machine upon opening the doors.
An early 1980's style rectangular dash has analog instrumentation
and another cluster of analog gauges is seen in the center console.
This console, which includes the floor shifter and power window
toggles between the bucket seats is made of silver beige plastic
and is factory spec correct. The factory AM/FM/Cassette stereo is
parked firmly in its factory home and we note a factory installed
CB is still on board, just like the build sheet says it should be.
A padded 3-spoke stock steering wheel fronts the dash and sports
the crossed flags Corvette logo.
Drivetrain
A numbers matching 350ci V8 engine is fueled by the new Cross-Fire
Injection which includes 2 throttle bodies combined with
Chevrolet's computer control system. A numbers matching 700R4
4-speed automatic transmission bolted to the back, with higher
ratio first and second gear, as well as a fourth gear overdrive
increased the acceleration while not sacrificing economy, has been
treated to a new pan gasket and filter. The entire engine
compartment presents in good condition. Rounding out the drivetrain
is the 2.87 geared Positraction rear axle.
Undercarriage
Underside of the car reveals that surface rust is present, albeit
just a light peppering and things are structurally sound. Power
disc brakes are on all four wheels and providing the signature
Corvette ride is an independent coil spring front suspension that
works with a fully independent frame anchored differential and
transverse leaf spring rear arrangement. A single exhaust system
with dual stock replacement mufflers handles the spent fossil
removal with ease.
Drive-Ability
This car was a quick starter, and smooth runner. It has good
acceleration and handling. It's always a pleasure to take a few
laps on our test track with the T-tops out and the wind in what's
left of my hair. All functions were working swimmingly and frankly
those "space suit" seats are more comfortable than you can even
imagine.
A fine example of a rare commemorative edition Corvette. A verified
low miles, the factory build sheet, and all original and all early
80's design C3 package. This car will benefit from having its legs
stretched, and a good workout, not unlike a sleepy thoroughbred,
which has many races left in it.
