Vehicle Description
1986 Chevrolet Corvette
The C4 Corvette represented a clean break from the Zora
Arkus-Duntov-designed C3, with a completely new chassis and
sleeker, more modern but still evolutionary styling. It was the
work of a team under chief Corvette designer Dave McLellan, who'd
taken over from Duntov in 1975.
For consignment, we offer a 1986 version of America's sports car. A
5.7 liter aluminum head equipped V8 bored over .030 engine, a TPIS
Computer Prom, and a Crane camshaft all work together to show the
competition who the real boss is. Also, a very nicely preserved
Bright Red exterior, performance handling, and an improved fuel
injection system are just a few of the upgrades included for this
consignment. The odometer shows 27,632 miles however we cannot
verify this as the title reads Mileage Exempt. Read on my small
nimble warship friends.
Exterior
All clean Bright Red fiberglass in good condition with just a few
scratch offs of the paint are seen, the most noticeable on the rear
deck around the badge greet us at first glace. This C4 does not use
any chrome, just neoprene and fiberglass painted red and some black
accenting including a central black trim band running entirely
around the midsection of the car. Dual electric controlled sport
mirrors, a rear greenhouse glass and the squared off rear end
housing the round tail lights and we have a great stance for this
sports car. Dual dual exhaust tips are peeking out from the bottom
on the back and 1988 Corvette 17-inch wheels have 275/40ZR17 tires
with less than 200 miles clocked on them, (leaving plenty of tread
to smoke off!).
Interior
I'm seeing red when I swing the sporty shaped doors that present
with nice red leather for the door panels and again the tasteful
use of black for the armrest inset actuator and a speaker. Inside
we can perch on red leather in bucket form looking like racing
seats with their high curved side support bolsters. The seats have
aged nicely with some folds showing, and these have the controls on
the end of the lower side bolsters. The driver's seat has some
signs of wear with cracking on the entry side bolster area and
Simpson racing seat belts are installed for those track dayfun
times. I notice a full roll bar has been put in, and it works its
way around the seats and in the back storage section. This roll bar
is finished in a flat battleship gray color. The seats flank a
center console glovebox and various power option controls such as
power windows, power seats, and power mirrors. The rear glass is
equipped with a remote access button that will get you into the
rear storage area that has enough room to take the bags for a long
trip. A digital driver information system is seen on the square
design dash, and in the center climate controls and a factory radio
are all lined up nicely all in black including a warning light info
screen which could be a precursor to all things digital. Deep red
clean carpeting covers the floors under the seats and in back for
the storage area which has a fire extinguisher installed.
Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 with tuned port electronic fuel injection can be viewed
within an original engine bay with the flip of the front of the
car. This engine has had some modifications to enhance performance,
some of which are a Crane Cam, aftermarket aluminum cylinder heads,
a .030 overbore, 1.6 roller rockers, a Lingenfelter intake manifold
with the factory EFI. Our consignor notes that TPIS headers and a
computer prom have been added for a little extra kick in the
shorts. Borla provides the muffler system which is dual piped.
Bolted on back is a Doug Nash 4+3 manual transmission w override.
The rear axle weighs in at 3.07 ratio. Keeping everything cool is
an electric fan on the cooling system.
Undercarriage
Reasonably clean and rust free, the floor pans have a bit of patina
and road dirt. C4 independent transverse leaf spring suspension is
seen which now has a rear anti-sway bar. Updated 4 wheel disc
brakes from an 1988 Corvette are on for the big WHOAH and they are
dual piston calipers with stainless pistons. The spare tire had to
be sacrificed to do this little trick. All polyurethane suspension
bushings are on throughout.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up and the digital dash came to life with
all the stats. It drove very smoothly, had plenty of power, and the
handling with these C4's is stellar. I even experienced some G's!
For overdrive just press down on the shifter. A few frowns were
noted, although minor... in the digital displays there are some
bars that do not light upon the fuel and speedo displays. The
heater worked but there was no AC, and remember there is no spare
tire.
Overall a good Corvette all around. A worked 350ci engine which
runs well and starts quickly, and has extra performance with the
enhancements one can certainly take notice of when pushing it. Nice
red paint and gracefully aged red leather interior. All correct
badging, pure fiberglass and neoprene with no chrome.
