This Porsche Speedster replica is constructed on a modified 1969
Volkswagen Beetle pan and was built in 1994 by Specialty Auto Works
of New Tazewell, Tennessee and remain in business to this day
operating as Specialty Auto-Sports, Inc,. Its owner Steven Lawing
still remembers this vehicle! The sale includes complete Provenance
Binder for the vehicle including pre-order contracts and invoices,
registrations though its history and invoices of work completed. A
total of nearly $5k was spent 9/2023 preparing the vehicle for sale
and the motor runs extremely well and the car looks amazing.
This 356A replica is finished in red over brown vinyl upholstery
and is powered by a 1,835 CC flat-four paired with a four-speed
manual transaxle. Equipment includes a brown soft top, 15? wheels,
body-color bumpers, a Sony stereo, a Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering
wheel, and tonneau cover, The car features gold badging, a vented
decklid, and dual exhaust outlets with polished finishers, a
tonneau cover and side curtains. There is a bit of discoloration
visible on the right-side curtain window. Chrome-finished 15?
wheels wear Porsche-branded hubcaps and are mounted with Firestone
F-560 tires. The cabin features low-back front bucket seats and a
rear bench upholstered in brown vinyl with color-coordinated door
cards and tan carpets.
Equipment includes lap belts, a Moto-Lita wood-rimmed steering
wheel, a center console with integrated cup holders, and a Sony
stereo linked to door-mounted speakers. A small area of flaking
paint is noted on the steering column, and a small tear is visible
on the driver's side door panel and a small area of frayed carpet
under the right side of the dashboard. Instrumentation consists of
VDO gauges featuring a central 7k-rpm tachometer, a 150-mph
speedometer, and a fuel level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows
less than 7k miles. The oil temperature gauge does not work, and a
replacement aftermarket oil temperature gauge has been mounted
under the dashboard. The air-cooled 1,835cc flat-four is equipped
with a single carburetor and a chrome-finished air cleaner. Power
is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle.
Service in August 2023 involved adjusting the valves and idle speed
as well as replacing the rear oil cooler seals, pushrod tubes, rear
crankshaft seal, distributor cap and rotor, oil pump seal, and
valve cover seal.
A Tennessee-issued VIN tag is located in the driver's door jamb and
shows identification number TNVIN950633051267. The Tennessee title
carries a Specially Constructed Vehicle brand and lists the car as
a 1955 Porsche Replica.
