Vehicle Description
1969 Pontiac Firebird Convertible
The big news for the 1969 Pontiac Firebird was the introduction of
the limited-production, high-performance Trans Am model in March.
The 1969 model was carried over into mid-1970 since the succeeding
model was late, and surplus units had backed up. The 1969 Firebird
underwent a similar redesign as the Chevrolet Camaro. There were
flatter wheel openings, a lower roofline, sculptured body sides,
and a new front end with twin square grilles and separate Endura
pods for two headlights on each side. The gas cap moved behind the
rear license plate and front fenders were reshaped with wind-split
edges. The wheelbase remained 108 inches and the track 60 inches,
though overall length increased slightly to 191.6 inches. Sales for
the 1969 Firebird sales dropped to 87,709 units. The hardtop
remained most popular with 75,362 new owners, followed by a mere
11,649 convertibles. Prices began at $2831 for the hardtop and
$3045 for the convertible. Most, (66,868), Firebirds had Turbo
Hydra-Matic transmissions while 20,840 had manual gearboxes. The
base gearbox was a 3-speed but close and wide ratio 4-speeds were
optional. -Thx to Hagerty.com
For consignment, one of the 11,649 convertible Firebirds built in
1969 coming to our Hallowed Halls now in restomod form. A built
Pontiac V8 under the twin scooped hood and upgraded interior are
just the beginning for this Killer B. Add in some updated
suspension, then sprinkle in Wilwood brakes, and mix it up with
some billet bolt ons and this bee is ready to sting. This car rips,
but feels safe due to the upgrades, and has the conveniences to
boot.
Exterior
A dual intake scooped hood with snazzy 400 badging, hood
tachometer, deck spoiler, and blindinglyyellow paint scheme all
come together to make this consignment the best-looking Firebird in
this writer's opinion. Bright as the sun yellow in a recent respray
form is peppered with chrome accents in the form windshield
moldings, rocker and wheel arch trim, mirrors and door handles.
Lest we forget the added stinging bee on each rear quarter panel
that appears ready to inject some venom into the eagle formed rear
side marker lights. The front of the car has the body matching
bumper, and a chrome "beak", split in the center egg crate grille,
emblazoned with the Pontiac badge. Dual horizontal LED headlights
with a chromed quad split and signal lights hanging below complete
the racy looking front. A dual scooped hood makes its way rearward
and all paint on this car is near excellent and the gaps are good,
with a few areas of misalignment on the hood front bumper area but
it is very slight. Out back is a low profile spoiler dressing the
trunk lid and sequential LED thin horizontal tail lights are fitted
into the rear filler panel. A thin bumper in chrome is just below
and dual exhaust peeksout from under the yellow rear valance.
18-inch highly polished Foose wheels are wrapped in staggered width
high performance low profile rubber giving this skate a little
extra buzz in the looks department.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we are greeted with black vinyl tuck and
roll patterned door panels. These remain in excellent condition
with their original cranks and trim, as well as pristine pulls and
armrests. With a look inside the passenger compartment we see a
very nicely updated interior. This includes black vinyl high back
racing buckets with broad tuck and roll inserts and body hugging
smooth bolsters. A custom black vinyl covered center console races
from the rear to the dash and houses a glovebox, twin cup holders
and the aircraft inspired horseshoe shaped shifter. A look to
thedash and we see dual deeply embedded into an angled forward dash
gauges and a Vintage Air controller on the right side. A 9" touch
screen Alpine stereo with 4 6x9 speakers, custom subs and 2 2.5"
tweeters is in to satiate the audiophile in you and just below are
a trio of white face auxiliary gauges in the center above the shift
lever. Ablack metal sprayed glovebox fronts the passenger and a
Sparco rally steering wheel mounted atop a Flaming River adjustable
column fronting the dash. Black carpet in good condition floods the
floors and I cannot forget to mention the trunk, which is beyond
amazing with the custom speaker box, clean black carpeting and
trunk mounted battery.
Drivetrain
Here's the money shot kids, with a sparkling yellow 400ci V8 being
fed by a Holley 4-barrel carburetor perched atop a polished intake
manifold. Keeping everything cool is an electric cooling fan and 3
row aluminum radiator. Backing up this beautiful as well as
powerful mill, is a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission and it
sends power rearward to a 10 bolt rear axle. Billet fender braces
have been added to the bay for a little dress up along with billet
hinges and a serpentine accessory drive set up.
Undercarriage
Virtually showroom condition, fully restored and very few flaws to
speak of. We note the addition of Hotchkis subframe connectors and
3 tubeheaders that feed down to dual exhaust with Flowmaster
mufflers added for that perfectmuscle car sound. Nothing but clean
black steel here for the flooring, unibody and suspension. Speaking
of which, we note independent coil spring suspension up front with
tubular control arms and leaf springs in the rear. Wilwood disc
brakes are seen on all 4 corners and we note some extra cross
bracing for the chassis has been added.
Drive-Ability
This car lit up immediately, and with a short warm up it was ready
to roll. We went for a ride and this car rips. There is no fooling
around and after you get it up there, you can bring it back down
with Wilwood brakes, you can swing it around corners easily with
power steering, and all in the comfort of cold blowing A/C. A nice
build, very good ride, albeit quick.
Talk about a restomod build, this is an academy award winning
example all in excellent condition, above, below, and under the
hood. Everywhere you look, you see quality build, and if you turn
this car on, you'll hear it too. I'm going to have to praise the
accolades with great acclaim within my commendation. Get it while
it's hot, but don't wait around too long and get stung!!! OUCH!
