For Sale: 1971 Datsun 510 in diamond bar, California

Vehicle Description

This 1971 Datsun 510 wagon was acquired in 2022 and was refurbished by the previous owner who found her back in 2014. The exterior color is Beryl yellow, the brightwork was refreshed, the black interior was redone, and an L18 1.8-liter inline-four was built and installed along with a 280ZX five-speed manual transmission and a Mazda RX-7 limited-slip rear end. The engine is equipped with dual Weber carburetors, an Isky camshaft, a 2.25″ exhaust with a MagnaFlow muffler, an aluminum radiator with an electric fan, and a lightweight flywheel. Other features include vintage 14″ Crimson wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a modified and lowered suspension, Japanese-market bucket seats and door panels, an aftermarket steering wheel, and Coco floor mats. 

The car has been refinished in single-stage PPG Beryl Yellow, with work beginning in 2014 and completed by 2018. During this period the brightwork was refreshed, the holes for overriders in the bumpers were filled, the rear marker lights were shaved, and the weatherstripping, fenders, turn signals, rear lenses, fuel cap, wipers, and rear emblem were replaced. Other features include a front air dam as well as fender-mounted mirrors. The front grille is said to be a Bluebird SSS unit imported from Japan.

Gold-faced 14″ Crimson Zed Compe Spoke 4 wheels were produced from 1978 to 1980 and are mounted with polished barrels and a mix of Federal and Yokohama tires. Wilwood front disc brakes have been installed along with a rear-brake assembly from a Mazda RX-7, and the suspension has been modified with the following components:

  • Techno Toy Tuning 280ZX front coilovers
  • FutoFab front lower control arms and tension rods
  • Techno Toy Tuning roll-center adjusters and front camber plates
  • Techno Toy Tuning rear leaf-spring lowering kit
  • Rear air shocks to aid in adjustment of ride height

Reclining front bucket seats are sourced from Japan and are trimmed along with the rear bench in black vinyl with textured inserts. The door panels were also imported from Japan, and the battery has been relocated under the rear bench. Red-patterned Coco mats are fitted in the footwells, a rubber mat is located in the cargo area, and the window cranks, carpeting, and headliner have been replaced. The seller states that the wiper motor has been rebuilt and that Dynamat insulation was installed to the interior panels including the roof. The Hitachi AM radio is disconnected,The L18 1.8-liter inline-four has been rebuilt with Wiseco pistons, Maxpeedingrods connecting rods, an Isky camshaft, a polished crankshaft, and a ported and polished W53 cylinder head. The exhaust manifold has been ceramic coated, and the fuel tank was boiled and cleaned. Dual Weber carburetors are utilized along with a 2.25″ exhaust, a dual-outlet MagnaFlow muffler, a 280ZX oil pump, and a Koyo aluminum radiator with dual electric fans.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission sourced from a 280ZX, while the limited-slip rear differential was taken from a Mazda RX-7. A lightweight flywheel and a Datsun roadster clutch are also utilized, and the final-drive ratio is 3.90:1.
