Vehicle Description
2000 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Roadster
Mercedes-Benz SL appeared for the first time in 1954 after the
American importer Max Hoffman convinced the German carmaker to
build an open-top, two-seat, luxury roadster. He gave the nameplate
idea to the carmaker. That's how the legendary SL, (Sport-Leicht or
Sport-Light), was born. In 1989, the fourth generation was one of
the fastest and luxurious roadsters on the market. Unlike any other
Mercedes-Benz available, the SL was built as a Grand Tourer, with
room for two, a long hood, a short cabin, and an even shorter
trunk. Its thick and raked A-pillars served as a safety arch to
protect the occupants in an unlikely roll-over situation. In 1998,
the carmaker introduced the SL's final facelift, which brought
body-colored door handles and different, rounded tail lights. The
side-vents behind the front wheel-wells were different, with two
more sweeping cuts instead of three narrower ones as before.
Inside, Mercedes-Benz changed the interior almost completely. The
dashboard looked similar, but the instrument cluster featured
silver rings around the dials. Depending on the version, the car
sported wood-trims or aluminum ones. For the sound system,
Mercedes-Benz switched to the fiber-optic network instead of
copper-based wiring, closely working with Bose for an excellent
sound experience.

Exterior
Enveloped in beautiful Desert Silver, a stunning dark beige
metallic hue, the exterior of this car looks like it just came from
the showroom. Included is the optional hardtop, which is
electronically released and relocked on with the touch of a button.
Upon its removal, you have the black canvas convertible which
remains sight unseen when folded electronically behind the driver
and passenger. We note a few very small tears in the canvas top
along with the rear plastic window starting to separate from the
top. Integrated body matching Desert Silver bumpers, aero inserted
and smoothed headlights, a swept back front glass, ribbed tail
lights, (they're self-cleaning ya know), and we have a sports car
in sweeps clothing. Mercedes 5 spoke 17-inch alloy wheels are on
all 4 corners and show with some wear, staining and light curb rash
and are wrapped with deeply treaded high performance rubber. The
exterior package is completed with simply stated elegance,

Interior
Java leather, with plush padding and stitching, allow the driver
and passenger an almost endless array of recline, height,
temperature and stiffness options at the touch of a series of
buttons on the door. These buckets have some light wear in the
bolsters in their front sections, but this is from normal age wear
and certainly not abuse. There is a storage area behind the two
bucket seats, as well as a wonderfully fully lined trunk in light
tan velour. The doors are lined with a tasteful mixture of Java
leather, molded vinyl, power seat actuators, memory position
buttons, and highly lacquered burl. This burl can also be seen in
the center console housing the Bose AM/FM/Cassette stereo with
trunk mounted CD changer, window controls, top actuator as well as
the shifter. The dash is a beautiful complimentary tan and brown
leather and molded vinyl. Analog gauges keep you informed of all
major functions. A leather wrapped sport steering wheel can be
adjusted to ergonomic alignment for the driver, no matter what size
they are. Manually moving the shifter or simple automatic shift
modes can be chosen at the driver's will and a standard and
winter/wet shifting mode can be had with the flip of a toggle.
Flooding the floors is tan carpeting that is fairly clean and has
protective tan carpeted mats on top.
Drivetrain
A 5.0 SOHC liter V8 drinks from an electronically controlled fuel
injection system and produces 303hp. The smooth as silk 5-speed
Daimler Benz 5G Tronic automatic transmission can whisk you
efficiently, or sporty down the highway by turning the limited slip
equipped 2.56 geared rear axle.
Undercarriage
Independent front and rear suspension provide a ride that fools you
into exactly how fast or slow you are really traveling. 4-wheel
power disc brakes stop this luxury sports car on a dime. A
peppering of surface rust is seen on some bolts here and there, but
overall clean rust-free stamped metal ground effects panels abound
along with lightweight cast aluminum throughout.
Drive-Ability
Nice sounds not only from the engine compartment but also from the
stereo system. However, I chose to listen to the engine which
performed beautifully with lots of unlimited acceleration, bias
free panic stopping, and handling like a sports car should. All was
working fine for the test drive and I was enjoying myself so much I
took an extra parade lap and a quick trip for some McNuggets from
the local McDonalds.
A fine example from 2000 Mercedes Benz engineering, that has
remained timeless. Plenty of options and conveniences adorn this
car, and the color combination with the complimenting Desert Silver
and the wonderful mixture of materials all in the light tan/light
brown color way for the interior. Sport luxury can be yours right
