Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Camaro Hardtop
In 1966 Mustangs were flying out of Ford showrooms, and Chevrolet
needed an answer. After many secret meetings, and covert internal
press events, engineers unveiled the official name for what had
been known up to this point as XP-836. Camaro was the chosen
namesake, and immediately the question became "but what does it
mean?". This question has no official linguistic answer, but as
Chevrolet marketing people would answer "It's an animal that eats
Mustangs!"
For consignment, a nice slightly modified Chevrolet Camaro from its
second year of offering to the public. A former Texas car with a
350ci V8, 4-speed manual transmission, new flooring and body
panels, some nice exterior paint, and a clean undercarriage and
ladies and gentlemen we have a great example, slightly custom.
Exterior
Leading the way is the RS trim hidden headlight egg crate grille
with a reverse scooped hood just above and a chin spoiler below. A
mustache thin body shiny chrome bumper leads the way to a well
applied Bolero Red background that provides the foundation for
paint on this rust-free car. We do note some chips and touch ups,
along with evidence of body filler, but this is mostly down low on
the rockers, doors and lower front quarters. Wheel well edge
trimmings provide a frame for the deep dish 15-inch rally wheels on
all 4 corners and Rally Sport badging . Well preserved chrome is on
all the trimmings which include window surrounds, door edges,
mirrors, and wipers. On the back we see a small spoiler and
rectangular tail lights for this first gen iteration. A side view
gives you a great view of the awesome stance of this car with its
larger rear tires and slightly jacked up suspension with polished 5
spoke 17-inch REV wheels providing extra bling. Truly a wild pony
car ready to gobble up Mustangs at any moment.
Interior
Black bucket front seats covered in vinyl and a rear bench seat are
in used but good condition with only slight wrinkling, mainly
reserved for the driver's lower cushion. Slightly faded black
carpeting covers all floor surfaces and above is a black headliner
presenting with a few wrinkles toward the back. A thick rimmed 3
spoke steering wheel frames 2 deep round gauges clusters on the
angled in dash front. There are no cracks to note in the black
padded dash topper and in the dash center is a textured black panel
which houses the climate control sliders and radio delete. This
panel is framed by smooth chrome trimming and has the obligatory
ashtray hanging from the bottom. The door panels, with their padded
black vinyl covering show as nearly new with bright chrome inlays
and a clean black vinyl armrest. Chrome handles litter the black
and the central tuck and roll padding adds a nice touch. Sitting in
the middle of the hump is a leather wrapped shifter with a chrome
topper ball.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a gleaming consigner stated 350ci This mill has a
Weiand aluminum intake and a single 4-barrel carburetor feeding it.
A 4-speed Saginawmanual transmission is on with a new clutch and
flywheel. Waaay back is a 10-bolt rear axle. With its orange
painted block, silver snake-like headers, and chrome bolt ons, this
engine is another one of the many stars of the show on this
Camaro.
Undercarriage
All very clean with no road dirt and a light sprinkling of surface
rust on the usual suspects, everything appears as it has been well
taken care of and finished in chassis black including the new
flooring. Independent with new spindles, springs, and lower ball
joints for the front and new leaf springs for the rear, and we see
front power disc brakes with new pads as well as power rear drums
and a new master cylinder. Flowmaster provides the exhaust and
mufflers which feed from silver finished snake like headers. Our
consignor notes that a new fuel tank, sender and lines have
recently been installed along with a new chrome power steering
pump, new steering coupler, and new motor mounts.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter, and a bit of time to warm up, and we were off to
the test track. This car has Jesus bar grabbing acceleration,
decent handling, and good brakes. All functions were working at the
time of this test track tool around with the exception of the horn
not tooting, the headlights having to be manually opened, and the
heater core not being connected, otherwise it is a satisfying car
to the eye.
With some modifications, a clean engine bay, nice interior, and
rust-free undercarriage this is a goer and a shower. Great color,
excellent brightwork, nice stance, and hidden headlights. That sums
it up for this car whose namesake means it eats Mustangs. Race
